More About the Author

Before I could walk I was painting and drawing. I was desperate to go to school and cried after my first day, because they hadn't taught me how to read and write in one day. When I was a child, I painted, drew and wrote all the time as I moved with my family around the world, living in houses, flats and camper vans moving from school to school, sometimes home ed., and back to school again. We always had animals, usually strays we picked up on the way and they were often my closest friends. I have continued to travel, write, draw and paint, always with animals, living in squats, tents, vans and boats. As a mature student I studied a BA in illustration at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge and won the highest awards given in the Macmillan Children's Book Prize for both my final two years. I had a great success with the DAISY picture books and EBB AND FLO, whose characters were brought to life on television.

I am now, after many years of living on an old fishing boat with my husband whilst travelling around the Mediterranean(the same one featured in SHIP'S CAT DORIS and EBB and FLO), have settled with a rescued horse and a donkey in a barn we're converting in France.

This is a sensitively written tale of a small pig's search to find her true home and the trials and tribulations that she suffers to get there. The beautiful black and white illustrations complement the storyline to make the book a truly captivating read for children of all ages.

This was my son's first real novel (he is 7 years old). He read the entire book in 5 days... and he is normally not one to enjoy reading - he likes dinosaurs, bugs, etc. He couldn't put this book down!

A great story for kids 23 Feb 2010
By Brittany Moore - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
Beryl just wants to find a home where she is loved. After her mom died when she was born, Beryl was left with her aunt and two cousins. She was treated like Cinderella and was waiting for her prince to rescue her. When the aunt tricks the farmer into taking Beryl off to the slaughter house, Beryl knows she must escape, even if it means going into the wild. When she finds wild pigs she has to decide whether they can be trusted, or if they will be dangerous and try to attack her like she grew up knowing.

This was a fast little read. I enjoyed it as much as I can, it was a bit younger than I typically enjoy. This story did deal greatly with prejudice though. I find a lot of middle grade novels really address global issues that help serve as an introductions for young readers into the greater scheme of things. If you had a younger sibling or cousin, this would sere as a great present if they don't mind talking animals. I usually don't enjoy it when animals can talk but this had almost and Animal Farm feel about the way the animals were anthropomorphized. I sort of wished Dew was a boy, I just kept thinking of him as male the whole time I was reading; it seemed fitting. I loved the illustrations in this book especially the little piggy prints that would randomly crop up on a page. This book had some sad moments and some happy moments and all in all it was a good journey and a good read.

First Line:
"Beryl sat in her sty."

Favorite Line:
"'But we're not allowed in, and I'm so pink!' said Beryl."

A Kid's Review - Published on Amazon.com

I've always been a pig lover, and this book was adorable. All pig lovers will love this book. It makes you worry in some places, and it makes you excited! It also makes you sad, but it also makes you happy! It makes you every emotion possible! Except angry, of course. Anyway, I loved this book!
