Product Description

A hilarious story about the triumph of the underdog, with plenty of visual jokes! Bertie was a watchdog. He was just a very small one. But size isn't everything as one big and nasty burglar finds out in this knockabout comedy celebrating the triumph of the underdog! Illustrated with waggish humour by Arthur Robins, famous for his Seriously Silly Stories, this hilarious picture book is long in more ways than one! Printed in an unusual format, with fifty-six pages rather than the usual thirty-two, it'll keep children and their parents laughing looong after they've put it down!

About the Author

Rick Walton is a former teacher. He speaks Portuguese and Spanish, has travelled throughout North and South America, and now lives in Brazil. He says of Bertie Was A Watchdog, "I like stories where things are not as they seem. A watchdog is usually big and mean. I thought it would be fun to write a story about a watchdog who you discover is not big and mean - who protects not with his bark or bite, but with his brain." Arthur Robins has worked as a freelance designer in the advertising industry, and as an illustrator for various magazines. His work has been exhibited in both London and New York. He has also illustrated numerous picture books and fiction titles for children, including The Magic Bicycle; Little Rabbit Foo Foo; The Teeny Tiny Woman; Mission Ziffoid; The Finger-eater; The Polecat Cafe; The Magic Boathouse; Impossible Parents; The Impossible Parents Go Green and The Last Chocolate Biscuit.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 stars from my children, 27 Aug 2008

I thought I should review this simply because my children (aged 3 and 5) found it hilarious - esp. when done with character voices. I got it from the library, we've read it at least twenty times, and I'm planning on buying it for one of my nephews. Well recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top dog!, 12 Aug 2005
This review is from: Bertie Was a Watchdog (Paperback)
Well, I'm biased because my boy is called Bertie ... but this really is a super little book. It has a nice, quirky story with a good twist and is also written in a way that creates a good rhythm as you read, eg some final words of sentences on the next page and one spread without any words at all.

My daughter enjoys making all the police car's "nee-nah" noises which get louder as the book progresses making this book an ideal two-in-one bedtime story for children both sexes - and all names.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best things come in small packages!, 19 Mar 2004
This review is from: Bertie Was a Watchdog (Crabapples) (Hardcover)
This story is brilliantly written and excellently illustrated. About a tiny little dog who tries to protect the house when a burglar breaks in. The little dog may be small and feable but he is very clever and tricks the burglar. I am a trainee teacher and found the children listening to the story roaring with laughter. It contains sounds which they can join in on, and repetitive language. It is suitable for 4 - 6 year olds. I know from experience this book is a hit and children wont let you put it down! A must have for any parent or primary school worker!
