"An Illuminated Nature" 12 Dec. 2013
By Ivana Mladenovic - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
When Impressionism began as a Parisian art movement in 1874, it fostered a new way of interpreting and visualizing the outside world. Well-known Impressionists like Claude Monet, Pierre Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sisley, Camille Pissarro, Edgar Degas, and others regarded nature as sacred. However, they also recognized its beauty as fleeting and momentary. They sought to encircle its changing moods with patterns of light, purity of color, and animated brushstrokes. They utilized the most immediate and convincing realism possible. Ultimately, Impressionism became a framework and metaphor for expressive and examined life.
Like many of her male counterparts, Berthe Morisot (1841-1895), also received training at the School of Fine Arts in Paris. However, her singular determination to overcome obstacles led her to become the first woman to successfully exhibit and work professionally in the Impressionist manner. Throughout her career, she defined and practiced Impressionism according to her unique terms.
As curator and author, Marianne Mathieu explains, "she went beyond doctrine". She saw her privileged knowledge as "service" to new visions and techniques of creativity. Her work championed and displayed originality and talent. She showed "no distinction between genres". Additionally, Morisot triumphed with her singularly fastidious working method. Mathieu characterizes this objective as one of serious and numerous studies of an object under observation. The author asserts that such dedicated sketches were of great importance to Morisot's artistic development and precise temperament. Even when it was "impossible to work outdoors", the exactness of her preparatory technique proved advantageous in the final completion of a desired image. According to Mathieu, Morisot always centered on meticulous planning and preparation. Her works display a concrete understanding of the integration of solid form and empty space, as well as the interaction of figures in that space. Her complex representational and compositional experiments were empowered by "clarifications, modifications, and adjustments". Such was the intensity of her effort to reach perfection. In her choice of "working tirelessly" on vibrantly rendered images of lakesides, gardens, parks, seascapes, countrysides, and intimate portraits, she mastered the essential lessons of every multi-media artist. She worked simultaneously and capably in oil paints, watercolors, red chalk, pastels, colored pencil, drypoint, and lithograph prints. As a result of her strivings, Morisot imbued her life with a new purpose and sense of direction. Impressionism presented her with opportunities to represent and invent a cherished form of existence.
The author's careful survey of the one hundred and fifty works which comprise this first complete retrospective of the artist at the Museum Marmottan Monet since 1941,are immensely readable and inviting documents of Berthe Morisot's sense of focus and freedom. The extensive scope of this exhibition catalog seeks to introduce us to Morisot's specific Impressionistic approach. At the same time, it shows us how the artist used her courage to transcend it. Whether in times of greatest happiness or greatest difficulty, her highly original agendas provided refuge, stability, and composure she wished to regain and maintain.
In fact, her legacy of creativity as a form of personal harmony and regeneration should inspire all of us.
