First off the book is captioned wrongly, the photographer is Bert Teunissen and the book is a MONOGRAPH of his superb photographs.

These are superbly executed 4x5 photographs from a really interesting project. Teunissen spent a number of years travelling to various parts of Europe to photograph the beautifully, naturally lit interiors of unrennovated houses along with their elderly inhabitants centre stage. The result is a glimpse into the recent past, which will soon be gone forever. The images are by turns moving and intriguing. That many people obviously live in these sometimes beautifully simple and spartan houses, without modern conveniences, in order to remain connected with a reminder of their past raises the viewer's curiosity in a way that simple interiors would not. Well worth the space on any photographers bookcase. 5 star plus.

Stunning pictures, good print quality. 27 Nov 2009
By John J. Falkenstine - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Being born and spending a large part of my life in the General Area of the Netherlands where many of these pictures were taken, I can relate to them. One of them bears an uncanny resemblance to the kitchen of one of my Aunts, pump handle and all. (It still exists). It also shows that more than likely a aging Dutch kitchen from 300 years ago had a better standard of living than some current Eastern European farm kitchens, the difference is just stunning. The book is large, print quality is really excellent, altough unfortunately the remains from the print runs that are done are suffering from handling and storage problems. One of the errors done in this book is that photographs face each other. (But that is why there are so many images in ONE book), and that the pressure of books in stacked storage has a tendency to start rubbing the ink of one image into another. How to solve this? BUY one of the books and give it a better change. BTW, mine was damaged in shipping so if you buy one stipulate that it has to be shipped NOT WRAPPED but in a cushioned box.
It's all about the light. 24 Sep 2008

This is an exceptional book, showcasing the many skills of the photographer, Bert Teunissen. It's as if he's conducted an archeological dig of Europe and uncovered some of the most priceless domestic images ever recorded. Every one has it's own majesty and stillness. I felt the cold that pervaded most of these sparse, humble spaces.
I shoot table top myself and I couldn't help viewing Bert's images as exactly that. His use of natural light (source lit, every frame), is wonderful. Very skillful. If you don't think so, try it one day and see how difficult it is to get the sort of results Bert got.
I also collect photographic books - think Peter Beard - and this book is right up there.
Favorite image - take a peek at La Alberca #6, 1/3/2005, and smell the smoked sausage.
