A little and personal overview of "Berserk: The Complete Collection" available on DVD

Berserk is a seinen manga created by Kentaro Miura.
With 36 volumes and still on going, this manga really put itself at the top of the world's most appreciated stories of redemption, anger, violence and revenge.
Back in 1997-1998 an anime adaptation (mainly The Golden Age Arc, where only the first episode is from a small part of the Black Swordsman Saga, which is chronologically after the Golden Age Arc) was made and it was a good success, introducing a lot of people (including myself) to the dark world of Berserk.
But now let's see the pros and cons of this series!

+ A lot of the background landscapes are like a painting and they are really beautiful
+ The overall feeling of the series is really dark and almost unsettling
+ The chara design is very similar to the one used in the original manga
+ The story is easy to follow, but it's very interesting with some really cool plot twists
+ The soundtrack is magnificent! The composer Susumu Hirasawa really nailed it
+ The absence of various "comic reliefs" like Puck (the little elf) made the series even darker!
+ Guts, Casca, Griffith, Judeau, Rickert and all the other members of the "Band Of The Hawk" are unforgettable characters because they are easily likeable

- You can see that the budget was very limited from the various animations and long shots of the characters
- The overall violence is really cut down if compared to the original manga (of course, if you don't like guts and pieces of meat flying around this point will be a plus to you!

This is by far one of the best Animés I've seen to date. The story, the action and the artwork is simply awe-inspiring - I was totally blown away by this.
Without going into too much detail and giving any of the story away if you like Manga, lots of action, a very well thought out story with great character development, humor, oh yes and lots of blood then look no further! This is officially my favorite ever Manga!!! BUY IT - you won't be disappointed!!!

Berserk is fantastic; in story, in writing and in execution. It is a magnificent piece of action anime. Dramatic, brutal and unrelenting in its darkness. It beats many other anime to a pulp hands down. It follows the adventures of a mercenary Gatts, living in a medieval era of the Midland monarchy during a 100 year war. He lives a hard life and survives by his wits and his incredibly large sword. The first season (and how we wish for a second, but we all know it's not gonna happen) covers Gatts involvement with the mercenary group "The Band of the Hawk" and its leader, Griffith. The story is very well told and follows a long arc from beginning to end, explaining Gatts past to the reason of why he ended up the way he did in the first episode. (In other words, the entire series is a flashback) In it, you see the lithe and powerful Griffith do whatever it takes to achieve success, with his dark-eyed beauty of a lieutenant Caska ever faithful and always vying with the newcomer, Gatts. Based on a comic book (manga), the battles are usually shown with interesting single cell depictions of events. And the fighting tends toward a realistic hack and slash as you see each person fight and defeat their opponents. The violence level is high, there is a lot of blood. With such a serious subject matter, some light moments are injected, as well as occasional bits of comedy, to help keep the audience from getting bored. Sometimes one gets caught by a series, there were a few problems like how the show mainly focused on the 3 main characters Gatts, Casca and Griffith and ignored the rest of the mercenaries but it still managed to be quite an intriguing show. Berserk really is one of my favorite animes of all time with beautiful animation, a great storyline and interesting characters. The end could be a little bit disappointing for some, but i think its just because the anime ends with an open end - on the other hand it just motivates you to go and read the manga.

The time is around the 1040 AD period, During the 100 year war. Based on the popular Manga comic series, Berserk (anime) does a great job at capturing the moments on paper and bringing emotion with them onto our TV screens. As a reader i have noticed some particular events were taken out of the anime. On the other hand i have noticed some things have also been added that are not from the comic. With the fact the writer and illustrator of the Manga series condoned everything that happened in the series (Kentaro Miura.) makes it that much more satisfying. We are thrown into middle England and into the life of an orphan boy who has learned nothing but war, his only posession being a sword. Fighting in battlefield after battlefield to make money the only way he knows, he comes across 'The Band Of The Hawk'. This leads to The boy (Gatts) growing into a man and learning to dream rather than just surviving. If i say too much i will spoil it for the ones who are yet to watch it but it is a brilliant story, the characters are shining and the hero is legendary. The music in the series is perfect, it portrays the moments beautifully. My personal favourite anime series.
