If you like the good multichannel recordings, I think this album is one of the most perfect in this genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fab SACD 25 May 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This SACD is brilliant. The music comes to life and the surround sound SACD format offers a clarity and involvement in the performance that is lost in stereo. A great example of why UMG should still be releasing SACDs.

2.0 out of 5 stars Curiosity value only 6 Feb 2006
Format:Audio CD
If you've been brought up on the original soundtrack version of this, then you'll immediately be ill-at-ease with this one. It's far too operatic an approach for the earthy subject matter and I can't imagine why Bernstein thought he could improve on matters.
For entertainment value, you can do no better than watch the video of rehearsals, in which Jose Carreras is given music lessons by Bernstein (in front of the whole crew), amongst many other fascinating insights.
The sound quality is excellent, only tending to sharpen the ludicrousness of the venture.

Can't really knock the contents of the CD and DVD - but ust be aware that the DVD included in this item is not PAL format for UK and Europe. Because it's aimed at the US market, just make sure your DVD player can play DVDs from all regions.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great but flawed 8 Dec 2007
By Martin R. Lash - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Some have called this project a disaster. This is an "operatic" version of West Side Story and may not be for everyone. The problem is that Jose Carreras was ill suited to the work. It shows the uncomfortable problems Bernstein has with Carreras. There is a moment when both were very annoyed with each other. But, Kiri Te Kanawa is glorious and the chorus and other singers are a delight. The DVD shows Bernstein was not well during the project: smoking a lot and moments when he seems to be in pain. Despite its problems the singing of "One Hand One Heart" is the best you will ever hear. Like I said, great but flawed. Still, the music is timeless and the DVD is very interesting to watch.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lenny made me feel like I was right there in the orchestra 30 April 2011
By The Music Man - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I'm in love with this DVD, I only wish that all of the musicians in the orchestra are listed. Unfortunately, their names are anonymous, although you live and breathe with them through every note that they perform. I love seeing Lenny bring out the best in the opera singers and musicians, correcting them, coaching them, sharing interpretations, begging them to get into his head so that they know what he is trying to achieve. I love seeing the emotional energy of musicians in rehearsing and recording sessions. Forget concert halls and tuxedos, this is where the soul emerges and you can witness the creative result as if you were part of the orchestra. They become "one" to create this masterpiece.
