5.0 out of 5 stars Great! 18 July 2010
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is as good as it gets, not as in debt as a language course but functional for a holiday or taster before learning the language.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good! 19 Mar 2011
Format:Audio CD
I want to become fluent in Swedish and as with every language I approach I avoid phrasebooks like the plague. This is because they teach very little, if any, grammar. I imagine because Swedes have to learn English at school from around age 8-10, as it is compulsory, that because they are fluent in English the audio products to learn Swedish are few and far between as there seems to be no language barrier to break. Though this is just a theory. Have a look on Amazon yourself and you will notice maybe three or four audios for Swedish, compare the audio products to that of say Danish, Finnish or Norwegian who have a good couple more available. There is the Teach Yourself range which are expensive and I would give them a 7/10; as well as the colloquial range but you need to be feeling rich for these. If you're just starting out or brushing up and want to get random vocab and phrases into you then this is the book! The book is small enough to be taken around with you and you can put the audio on an MP3 player. The text in the book is not small nor is it too big, the book is full colour and very easy on the eye. It is full of tips about Sweden too. What I really love about this book is that it provides the English word then the Swedish word then a break down of how it is pronounced and what stress goes on what part of the word. You cannot learn the stresses and tones well without hearing them so this is perfect for it.
For example - Anden and anden are two different words depending on how you pronounce them. Anden with a rising tone for 'an' means 'the duck' and if you drop your tone when saying the 'an' and raise it for 'den' then it means 'the spirit'.

My one issue with this audio is that some of the pronunciation is wrong!

3.0 out of 5 stars adequate 3 Sep 2010
Format:Audio CD
I needed to find a phrase book to replace the one I had which was over 30 years old - so this one satisfied our more up to date needs (internet, cash machines). Having used it on a visit to relatives in Sweden, it was not very good with some common words just not available (e.g. aunt). The CD was better than the cassette tape 30 years ago, but included things I was really not interested in while other phrases in the book would have been more useful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect introduction for travellers 28 Mar 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I bought this to use as a study aid for a group of adults visiting Sweden for the first time, on a business trip. It's ideal as an introduction to the language and for a first-time visitor getting around Sweden and coping in the usual situations: travelling, hotels and restaurants, social situations and asking for assistance.

One point which might have been revised in later editions: the used edition I bought (2005) had one outdated error, it uses "ni" as the formal "you". Nowadays this is obsolete in Swedish, and everyone uses "du". Hopefully it's been updated since.

Really handy book. I'll use it myself next time I'm visiting family there.
