About Berlitz

Berlitz has helped millions of men, women and children speak new languages, and its cultural consultants have assisted thousands of organisations in reaching across cultural barriers successfully. The company's origins date back to 1878 when language tutor Maximilian D. Berlitz developed a new method of teaching people. His approach, which he developed into the Berlitz Method, was so successful it became the gold standard of language instruction and led to what would become a globe-spanning organisation.

Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Vista 64 users might almost return Berlitz French, the installation menu doesn't work and when you hit the bright idea of installing directly from the disc a couple of error messages make you think it still won't work. Ignore these messages, once installed and restarted it works.

I've used Berlitz software before in France about 5 years ago and it's definitely worth the purchase. The user interface hasn't changed and neither have the features, I recognise old videos and exercises but they are solid and proven. Fortunately there are plenty of exercises to keep you going without too much repetition (depending on your work rate I'd say 3-6 months worth not including the pretty good grammar references).

PROBLEMS - *Online links to quizzes are dead or broken. *This program should be labelled for beginners only - the packaging insists this is for beginners to advanced yet all the Immersion Environments are labelled 'Beginner' and the cds don't raise the bar. *The American voices will either have you hitting the table in laughter or annoyance. You won't be taught 'Je suis anglais' but 'Je suis americaine'. Someone with an advanced sense of humour chose an old predatory American queen for the mp3 files and a female narrator from Disneyland for the audio cds. She sounds exactly like the female computer voice in love with Jeremy Hardy from ISIHAC. And her French pronunciation, even crisp and clear, is atrociously hilarious.

Michel Thomas' method or being thrown in the deep end in France are still the quickest and best ways to genuinely start forming your own sentences. But as traditional class-room methods go the Berlitz software is the best (while the audio cds use a novel and unproven method of comedy).

Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Berlitz have always been market leaders in Teach Yourself languages. This is a very flexible package, and is just what you need to get by very nicely En Francais. Very handy to be able to practice whilst stuck in traffic on the M25, and at home on PC or Laptop. You really can start with little or no knowledge of French, and quickly develop your skills at your own pace. I remember learning French at school, and it was BORING!! However, Berlitz have introduced "Fill in the Blanks" games, speech analysis exercises (which allows you develop more fluent French with an authentic accent, as well as a number of other great features. It actually manages to make learning French fun, and that is praise indeed. Don't expect this package to teach you to speak fluent French, just a good grounding, and more than enough to get by with. There are additional modules availalbe for more advanced students.

Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
It's a bit daunting to open a language course and find a 176-page booklet dedicated only to explaining how to use it - but luckily you don't have to read the whole thing before getting started. There are 6 CD's in total - 4 standard audio CD's, containing a complete standalone audio course, plus 2 installer CD's with the interactive app's, one for Windows and one for Mac. The Windows CD also includes the ready-prepared mp3 files for your iPod or media-player together with the Palm and PocketPC media. There are 100's of tiny mp3's files, each one with a different word or phrase to practise, and they've been thoughtfully tagged to make negotiating them easier on your iPod. However, it might be advisable to select them all in iTunes and, by opening the 'Get Info' window, change the 'Media Kind' to 'Audiobook' as this will separate them from your music collection and stop random French phrases punctuating your listening pleasure - although maybe that would be a good learning strategy?

The interactive app's are virtually identical on Mac and Windows but on both platforms the UI looks a bit dated and clunky although they work quite well, though not flawlessly, on both. Initially, there are too many options and buttons to click and you could hardly describe the whole system as streamlined but it gives you so many approaches to learning that you're bound to find a strategy that suits you. However, it's definitely worth taking the 'Guided Tour' before you begin.

Quick tip for Mac-users : the app's are mostly written for PowerPC and on recent Macs will run within Apple's 'Rosetta' PPC emulation system - Rosetta will not be installed by default on OSX 10.6 so be sure to include it if you upgrade to 10.6, or your language course may suddenly stop working.

I got the pack to try and resurrect some long-forgotten O-Level French and it's working! You do get the impression that Berlitz have gathered up some slightly-dated existing language courses and bundled them together to form this pack but, to be fair, that makes this pack amazingly good value at this price!
