This book will get you nowhere. The English-written phonetic pronunciation is inaccurate and inconsistent. At best, this book will allow you to show it to your Chinese counterparts so that they can pronounce what you are trying to say.
As an avid language learner, I do not find it hard to accustom myself to new languages and environments. But this book has only set me back in my travels in China.
Do NOT buy this book. It fails to address the most important part of the language, which is the discrepancy of tonality that the spoken language has. Basically, you will find yourself not being understood and having to point in the book to what you want to say so that the locals can say it for you, thus defeating the point of a phrase book.

This book is garbage, and quite a disappointment coming from Berlitz, who used to have a good reputation.
This book neglects the pinyin, and uses some lame attempt at getting an english speaker to pronounce chinese words while ignoring tonality. Go ahead and use this book if you want to be a complete tool.
I will not buy any more Berlitz Mandarin products, period.
