5.0 out of 5 stars Apotheosis 9 May 2008
By Hector Lerbioz VINE VOICE
This is one of those recordings which I keep coming back to. It improves on repeated listenings and sums up all the beauty and grandeur of Berlioz's music perfectly. Dutoit gets first class performances out of the Orchestre symphonique de Montreal. There is a muscularity in the melancholic Symphonie funebre et triomphale and a delicacy, mercurial wit and exuberance in the 3 movements from the Romeo et Juliette symphony that makes me wish that there were 2 discs encompassing the whole work. The recording has an exceptional clarity as each orchestra section is given the liberty to speak out as much as the music requires and the overall sound is warm and rounded.

The Symphonie funebre... is a particularly poignant Berlioz work as not only did it allegedly have a profound effect in 1840 upon its multitude of listeners at the Place de la Bastille ceremonies commemorating the dead of the July Revolution some 10 years earlier, but was also in part played during Berlioz's own funeral procession through Paris in 1869. For me it's one of those works which combines accessibility and mass appeal with Berlioz's own extremely personal voice.

This recording incorporates the added string parts in the 2 outer movements and the choral finale which Berlioz added in an 1842 revision. Having heard the original version as well, it's clear that Berlioz's artistic instincts were sharp enough to see the potential of the original work.

The 2 most high profile conductors who've recorded Berlioz within the last 30 years are surely Dutoit and Sir Colin Davis. There can be no doubt that Davis has an impressive back catalogue in terms of Berlioz recordings, but on the evidence of this recording alone Dutoit is a worthy rival.

4.0 out of 5 stars Symphonies Funebre et Triomphale. 22 Jun 2014

This is a splendid performance though not as moving as my old LP version in which there is a stronger impression of a procession moving from the distance to a climax as it passes, then fading away again. I have unfairly deducted a star because I was bored by the excerpts from Romeo and Juliette.

5.0 out of 5 stars Symphony 31 Jan 2014

I love Berlioz ! and especially the Symphonie Funèbre, here played by the Montreal Orchestra under Charles Dutoit.
It is no longer in the catalogue, but if you can get it second hand, buy it. This is the best Symphonie Funèbre I ever heard, even better in my opinion than Colin Davis, and that really means something !!!
