Christian Ferras took his own life in 1982, sadly ending a distinguished career which had in any case foundered somewhat as a result of his growing bouts of depression. It was a great shame, a tragedy, as this DVD shows. Not all of the performances reach the same heights but all are very watchable. It is fascinating to watch him playing Stravinsky's Concerto (even with a rather messy orchestral accompaniment), and the Sibelius Concerto and the Franck Sonata with his long-term piano partner Barbizet are excellent. The DVD concludes with a marvellous performance of Mozart's D Major Concerto from an even greater French violinist, Zino Francescatti. It's good to have these on DVD.

A bit disappointing really. I've always loved Kempff's Beethoven on CD, and I was looking forward to seeing him in performance. In person though (here at least) he's not the most charismatic of performers, and the very basic direction and camerawork (I assume it was from a 1960's TV performance) adds little. If you're a Kempff fan or a musician yourself and MUST see him play, this will fit the bill. Otherwise, I'd say 'stick to the CDs', which are magnificent.

Firstly the remastered sound is very well done but is is MONO which is not clear from the cover. The sound is smooth and this is a great performance but if you want mainly the music rather than a DVD video performance, it is not a first choice. Either of the Colin Davis performances, though of similar vintage, with the LSO or Concertgebouw can beat it hands down both on performance and sound but unfortunately these are only available on CD.

This dvd shows Szerying at his finest and he was a great violinist. His virtuousity and techique were wonders to behold and the musicality was right up there too.

I was very disappointed with this DVD, although the music is fine, the actual filming is not up to much at all, and I am not able to recommend it...
