Review

'A well-researched, fluently-written and utterly absorbing account of what life (and, so very often) death was like for ordinary Germans in the capital of Hitler's Reich during the Second World War. The Berliners' capacity for suffering, for sacrifice, for self-delusion, but also astonishingly for love - and even on occasion humour - is superbly evoked by Moorhouse's cornucopia of new information.' --Andrew Roberts, author of The Storm of War

'Berlin at War is a well-researched and beautifully composed account, vividly recreating those years of Nazi arrogance, oppression, and corruption, that ended in such terrible destruction and civilian suffering.' --Antony Beevor

"A finely observed social history of Berliners during the war." --Sunday Times

Moorhouse has chronicled a largely unknown story with scholarship, narrative verve and, at times, an awful, harrowing immediacy' --Sunday Telegraph

`Moorhouse's evocative social history...brings...the sights, sounds, thoughts and feelings of the ordinary Germans who lived here'
--The Telegraph

'Few books on the war genuinely increase the sum of our collective knowledge... but this one does' --Financial Times

`Measured, sympathetic... a fascinating corrective...thorough and engaging' --Mail on Sunday

Roger Moorhouse has marshalled an impressive range of primary sources...to create a gripping panorama of Berlin at war...' --The Independent

it manages to capture the complexities and contradictions of life in Hitler's Germany'
--Irish Times

`Moorhouse has written an extraordinarily detailed account of ordinary life in Berlin during the Second World War' --Sunday Herald

`there's a pounding quietness to Moorhouse's description of life in Berlin...the big stuff, including the final battle through the ruins, we've read before, but not the mean details' --The Guardian

I read this book off the back of a History Today Book Club recommendation. Moorhouse provides a vivid impression of what life was like in the German capital during the war. He gets behind the
stereotypes of jackbooted Nazis to show the real, human face of Berlin - and
it's an image that we would strangely recognise as being similar to our own. Highly recommended.

Berlin at War is a well researched and sympathetically written account of what life was like for ordinary Berliners during WWII. Our perspectives and prejudices are sometimes challenged, sometimes reinforced - yet the book always engages.
Although the author has conducted a number of new interviews Berlin at War is by no means just a "voices from" History book - it is far more subtle and elegant in its narrative and arguments.
Obviously this is a must read for anyone interested in WWII, but such is this book's scope and humanity that I hope it reaches a wider audience.

Berlin at War 4 Oct 2011
Format:Paperback
I too received this book to review via the Army Rumour Service (Arrse) Book Club. Having reviewed for them a book about the Blitz on English cities (London, Bristol, Coventry and Southampton amongst others), I was interested to see events from 'the other side'. This book was a fascinating insight, not only into how people survived bombing, but how Nazi society grew up, was maintained and failed in Berlin.

Mr. Moorhouse quotes a lot of first-hand sources, which bring the information to life, as well as some statistics which are quite mind-boggling (and some observations as to the Nazi attitude to building bunkers and shelters as opposed to that of the UK Government).

I'd definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about this period in European History.

Loved it.
Used this book to help me with my dissertation on the bombing of Germany during the war. I rarely read a history book from start to end but I was engrossed from the first page.
