Another beautifully produced and lavishly illustrated work in the T&H series about art in various European cities in the 1920s and 30s. (See St Petersburg, Munich and Vienna etc). This volume has a single authorship which gives the book a more even quality than some of the other volumes. However, again the English translation leaves something to be desired and you are left wondering what some of the passages actually mean. The book covers many aspects of the cultural scene in Berlin from theatre, film, art, architecture and design and in particular the move from the Expressionism of the early 1920s to the increasingly frenetic and bright ephemeral culture of the late 20s. The last chapter on the rise of the Nazis is not very satisfactory but perhaps so much has already been written that it is difficult to deal with in a few pages. The book also contains short biographies of the leading figures of the time. This is a beautiful book and is well worth the investment for the illustrations alone.
