Product Description

Published specially by After the Battle to coincide with the suspension of Allied occupation rights in Berlin in October 1990, this map was produced in 1944 by the War Office and lists the location and use of all important buildings in Berlin to be used in the occupation of the city. Every building associated with the Reich Government, NSDAP, police, fire service, Reichsbahn, U-Bahn, hospitals, telephone exchanges, embassies, prisons, etc., is numbered and referenced to an index printed on the reverse of the map. This sheet covers the central area at 1:12500.

I purchased this item as a basis for some research into a chapter in a fictional book I am writing. In general terms it is an extremely helpful document but has to be used in conjunction with other works. As a stand alone it may well flounder for serious research.
I find the map work slightly lacking in distinctness and would much have preferred a crisper inking process.
That being said I do not regret buying the item and, as I said before, its use in conjunction with other sources of reference really helps to give some sense of location and proportion to the names which stand out from those days in 1945.
I give this product 4* and for the price you simply cannot go wrong with it.

An extremely good find.
Not a guidebook at all, but used in conjunction with one (eg the Pastfinders series), it brings the past to life as you walk the streets of Berlin and see previous uses of existing buildings, previous land use before the wall and before more modern developments.
A must for anyone visiting Berlin with an interest in this era

As someone who moved to Berlin in 2007 I was interested to find out abit more about the history of the city. This map helped get my bearings with respect to where important buildings were in WW2 and important people would have been [I feel that this map could benefit from covering a larger area of Berlin but as it is, it covers the important parts]. Walking around Berlin today it is amazing to think of what the city was like not so long ago in the 1930s and early 1940s. But one thing to remember is that to Berliners the Cold War is more relevent than WW2. They have survived both and rebuilt their city into a wonderful place. I love Berlin and love the way it has recovered. This document is a fascinating reminder that Berlin was once a city that was fuelling evil. I would recommend the book Berlin Wall by Frederick Taylor to give historical story of Berlin pre-WW2 and during the Cold War to give this map some context. The post-Cold War history is still being written in Berlin and although some scars of WW2 can be seen in some places, the city has recovered
