5.0 out of 5 stars beautiful artwork, engrossing story, 24 Jun 2009
By N. Rossis (Athens, Greece) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Jason Lutes' Berlin series is a very unusual graphic novel. Many artists research thoroughly their subject before their pen ever touches paper, but Lutes has taken this aspect of design to completely new levels. From the eye-opening scene of the policeman directing trafic from his tower to the final page's powerful climax, the engrossing story gradually immerses us into a city that spirals from normality into chaos. The progression is so gradual that it is almost imperceptible, and one never realises the moment when Lute's beautiful art has become transparent; a window into a world now gone. The whole endeavour exhumes an understated, documentary-like quality that has no relation to Marvel's super-heroes, but is almost like watching a European film by a very talented director. Poignant and at the same time strangely contemporary, it is a rare work of art both as a design and as a story. I am now eagerly awaiting Book 3...

4.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing, exhilarating, dizzying and disquieting, 17 Feb 2009
By AJ Spencer (Pays de Gex, France) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The multiple story strands from the first volume criss-cross in every direction, threaten to explode at any moment into a myriad of fragments, and spin around each other in an ever accelerating whorl.

This is not an easy story to read. There is so much going on, and the switches between parallel strands so frequent, that it is difficult to become entirely absorbed in the book. The plot's complexity inevitably recalls a juggler holding an astonishing number of balls up in the air, and one is always wondering whether he will be able to avoid dropping any, and how he will manage to catch them all again and put them away.

Consequently, I can't decide whether this is a work of staggering genius, or one that displays a staggering potential that it nonetheless fails to altogether fulfil. Either way I'm looking forward to seeing where it will go in Volume 3.
