Best of the bunch 15 Aug 2001
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This book seemed to be aimed directly at people like me as someone who visited Berlin in the days when the wall was still up and who want to know as much as possible about how different things are now.

Like all the best Lonely Planet books the book seemed effortlessly to mold politics, history and the arts into a seamless whole. The section on architecture was particularly good.

It was good to have the U bahn map spread over 2 pages as quite a few books try to condense it onto one page which makes for fiendishly difficult reading for some of us 40 somethings. My only reservation concerns the maps at the back. I did not find these at all easy to follow on my recent trip to Berlin and did better with the free ones from the hotel or the Information office.

My visit was for several days so I was also able to make a day trip to Dresden. The book contained a very useful section on this city.

There seem to be a lot of good guides to Berlin in the shops but this is the one I would recommend to anyone who is a first time visitor or a returnee.

Great little guide for a short visit. Fits easily in the pocket compared to most of the other bigger guides I've used in the past. Since purchasing this Berlin guide, I've gone on to buy several of the other books in the series, although this appears to be the best. The pull out map is very useful. All the bars and restaurants that we visited on recommendation of this book were fantastic (you have to get one of the Doners that is recommended - BEST EVER!) and it gives nice descriptions of all the key sites in Berlin. Recommended! (NB: I think some of the reviews for the larger Lonely Planet Guide have got mixed in with reviews for the Encounter (and lowered the score for this book) - the 2 books are aimed at entirely different experiences...)

Excellent guide with detailed overviews and directions. Not too bulky to carry around with you. Also good to read - before and after the trip. Would definitely recommend to anyone visiting Berlin whether for a short city break or a more in depth visit.

Difficult to find anything
The good point is that gives background information about Berlin's history. It is a book to read before going to Berlin, but it is not a guide to take with you on the trip. Read more

Lonely Planet Berlin
This book was ok. A good way of seeing what is available in the city but not the easiest when trying to review bars or restaurants in a certain area. Read more

Top-notch travel guide
Excellent travel guide, very comprehensive in all respects. Maps a little difficult to read because of the small print. Other than that, no complaints.
