Not For Long-Distance Walking; Fine For Short Walks
on 28 May 2012
I'd never tried Berghaus boots before, having always had more expensive, heavier-duty brands. Having however been unable to replace my favourite (discontinued) model from another manufacturer and finding various similar brands offered nothing satisfactory, I thought I had nothing to lose by trying a cheaper type, so I bought a pair of these.
The good thing was, as others have stated, that I was able to put these on and walk immediately, with no wearing-in required and at no stage, even after hours of wear, did the boots themselves cause me any discomfort - and I have quite awkward feet to fit, so that's some accolade.
The bad thing was that every time I attempted anything approaching my usual distance, I became very fatigued and had to curtail my walks. An specialist outdoor retailer (who, perhaps significantly, does not stock Berghaus), suggested to me that this was because these boots lack forefoot support.
My experience therefore seems to suggest that over short distances people might be very happy with these boots (and the price - much cheaper than all my other pairs), but that more serious walkers would do better to buy something more substantial and supportive. What a shame that no manufacturer seems able to combine comfort with adequate support!
