As flight crew, I am quite hard on my baggage. I've been using Samsonite bags up until now, but needed a bigger one. Given it's good reviews I thought I'd give this one a go.

For the price, this seems to be somewhat on a par with the Samsonite bags in the £120 bracket I've been using. The finishing isn't as good as Samsonite, but the materials & stitching are on a par, and the wheels, telescopic handle, internal design and zips are better. I would expect it to last longer because of the better wheels & telescopic handles, which are the Achillies heel(s) of Samsonite bags.

The telescopic handle, although a mundane feature, really is superlative. Burghaus have managed to get the length just right so that it's out of the way while walking, while keeping it *so* rigid, without any of the wobbly flex my Samsonite's have.

Internally, the fold out packaging system is useful for separating things out. Additionally, it has been designed so that you can really overstuff the outside back pocket.

I'm not so sure about the shoulder strap system though; the loops and clips are all plastic, so given the size of the bag, I'm not convinced they are strong enough. However, I haven't tried.

One other problem I've had is that it won't balance on it's end when fully packed - it just falls over. It's not a huge issue, but does mean I need to lean it against something.

EDIT: after 9 months, the bag still looks and feels pretty much new, with no obvious wear or damage. The wheels (always the first thing to wear out on Samsonite bags) are absolutely 100%. I've used the shoulder straps on a few occasions when the bag was pretty heavy and the plastic loops and clips were fine.

I travel a lot on business and pleasure and have a wide range of suitcases and roller cases for virtually every occasion. My favourite case manufacturer is Samsonite, as I have bought many cases from them and their quality and after sales service is incredible. I received this product via the Vine Programme, otherwise I would probably not have bought this case, from what I had always assumed was a company that specialised in hiking gear.

The case itself is quite long and thin. It is not suitable for carry on luggage on any airline, so please ignore other reviews that say it "could be" used as hand luggage. The case is spacious, with ample amounts of pockets and is expandable by the way the front fabric stretches. It is well made with quality materials and the zips and stitching around the zips should last quite a long time if looked after. There is a pull out handle on the back, which does somewhat diminish the amount of space in the actual case itself. The wheels are unidirectional but run very smoothly. The only downside to this case is that it is long and thin so the centre of gravity is high and is not stable when stood up on its own if full of clothes. It does tend to rock from side to side when full, which is very annoying when trying to walk fast or run with it.

Overall this is a well made, good quality case, which if looked after should last a long time. You can pack a lot in it, enough for a long weekend. I would recommend the case so long as you are aware of the stability issues, due to the long structure and narrow base design. I like it and at £70+ it is well worth buying for the amount that can be packed into it.

Should anyone be interested in the dimensions (always a plus, for an item of luggage, no?), they are: (approx) 71cm (H) x 40cm (W) x 29cm (D). According to the Berghaus website, that is.

Took this to Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand, it carried everything and looks nearly new after my trip. Initially i thought it wouldnt survive, and i would still worry about the handle bar being a tad flimsy. I guess i had a fully packed case that it helped 'cushion' the whole case. I would have liked to have had an expansion option. The best thing is that it looks smart, slim so slots in nicely under beds and little spaces. The straps for the ruck sack version are not well padded and a tad awkward. I used that option only once, remember the size limits what you can carry abyway so its much easier to roll and lift when needed. The straps are just an extra selling point.

Plus points:
The bag is sturdy and feels well built. There are plenty of zips and pockets. The handle feels well made and solidand this has been an issue with other simialr bags I have had. The internal main area is well thought out with dividers to help manage the contents. It is a good colour. The fabric quality is good and does not look or feel 'cheap'. They have nice design touches of plenty of zip pockets and places to keep tickets etc. safe.

Negative points:
The front feels a bit too soft and I would not want to put it in the hold of a plane. There is no protection to what is inside the bag so you can't put anything fragile in it. If it is not full and something heavy got thrown on the top of it it feels as if it may even burst open. The main zips are very solid but it would be a concern. There are straps to carry it like a rucksack. The problem is the wheels will then rub against your lower back so if they are dirty at all then you'll soon have marks on your lower back. I certainly would nto use this 'function'.

Overall, it is a well designed and visually nice bag but I would not use them to travel by plane as the contents may get squashed. I do not like the clam like solid bags but I do like the front to have more strength. I would us them to travel by car or train and would have no problems with them.
