4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent lightweight waterproof(ish) jacket, 14 Oct 2009
By

(REAL NAME)
I've been using waterproof jackets of various types for many years and have found all to have their merits and de-merits. In this case, I was looking for a replacement for my previous Paclite. Initially, I trawled round the shops, only to find that Berghaus have changed the hood design on the new model, making it ridiculously ugly and uncomfortable (there's a wee flap that folds over the rolled up hood instead of a proper collar compartment). So, I did the inevitable internet search and found this - identical in every way to my old jacket.

So why did I jump at it in favour of the myriad other models on the market?
1. this is the most compact and lightweight GoreTex jacket I have ever owned, a significant plus when travelling of for summer hiking when you're not REALLY expecting rain;
2. It is pretty good at keeping the rain out, at least, as good as any GoreTex jacket I've owned;
3. It's also not bad at letting condensation OUT, though if there is any amount of external rain, it begins to build pretty quickly;
4. It's very good at keeping the wind off;
5. When it's on, it's a neat and snug fit, none of the horrible flapping around you get from the likes of Paramo's Nikwax Analogy, for example;
6. The hood is neat and has a stiff enough brim to keep it out of your eyes, unlike the North Face Paclite my original one of these replaced.

All of that said, there are downsides:
- it is only a lightweight jacket, so in heavy rain, it definitely fails before heavier ones would
- similarly, I wouldn't like to use it with a heavy pack as I don't think it would take the wear at the shoulders
- this design has now been superceded by a significantly inferior model

This will never replace my trusty Ventile jacket for the winter, partly because you can't comfortably fit much clothing under it AND have a jacket that fits when you don't need the extra warmth and partly because it simply isn't as waterproof, breathable or robust, but it does exactly what it's designed to do. I find it excellent for mountain biking, light walking or travelling and, as a repeat buyer, would heartily recommend this jacket to anyone.

I have been looking for one of these at a reasonable price for sometime. When you buy online you are not sure what you will get,however, it is every bit as good as I had hoped. if the weather looks a bit dodgy, then this is what I wear. The only slight drawback is that when you put your hand in your pocket, the velcro on the cuff catches the velcro on your pocket and sticks you there.

5.0 out of 5 stars An all-year-round jacket, 4 Sep 2011
By

This review is from: Berghaus Mens Paclite Gore-Tex Lightweight Jacket (Sports Apparel)
This is my second Paclite jacket. The last one still exists, is around three year's old and doesn't leak.
I've bought another because the old one just looks a little bit 'worn' (which it would, because I've worn
it to work pretty well every day since I bought it).

That's the reason I chose the same jacket again; because it can be worn every day, either over a
light-weight shirt, or with several layers (I buy a size to cope with the extra diameter!).

Over time, the water repellant treatment deteriorates but can be rejuvenated by tumble drying the jacket
on a low setting.

So there we are; I recommend you get one if you're looking for a light-weight durable (and presentable)
breathable waterproof.
