Jim Bergerac (John Nettles) is a recovering alcoholic, divorcee, father of a young daughter - and a Detective Sergeant with the Bureau des Etrangers, Jersey. Jim is a true maverick who likes doing things his own way - and consequently doesn't always carry out his investigations the way his boss would like. In this series, a three years sober Jim hits the bottle after failing to get a conviction against a suspected arsonist. Bergerac was one of those programmes I enjoyed watching when I was younger, so it was nice to relive my childhood through this box set. This series contains some excellent episodes including Ninety Per Cent Proof, Holiday Snaps and House Guests. One of the episodes Ice Maiden marks the first appearence of jewel thief Philippa Vale superbly played by Lisa Goddard. This series like the 1st and 2nd has a slightly dated feel about it especially some of the 80's clothes, but this adds to its charm. The series would go on to reach its peak with series 4 and 5. Once again the only let down is the lack of special features - hence the 4 star rating. Hopefully John Nettles will recond some more commentary tracks like on the first series dvd. All in all a great piece of classic tv nostalgia.

Another season of a great show. John Nettles (Midsomer series) plays another great character in the Bergerac series. Always a pleasure to watch. Highly recommend the Bergerac series to those who like Midsomer as it's in the same category of mystery/suspense genre.

I loved this 3rd series of Bergerac. At first I had to adjust to seeing John Nettles so young, after watching him for years in Midsomer Murders. The characters were interesting too - it was intriguing to see so many actors so young in that series, compared with how they are now over 20 years later. I have been disappointed though, with the abrupt end of each episode, which must have been the style of the day. Glad they give a bit more explanation of the outcome of things these days, but aside from that, I am glad I found out about the Bergerac series.

not as good as Barnaby
I had watched the whole set of Barnaby (and then Morse and Lewis)and I was interested in watching the younger John Nettles. Read more

Another Life
Just as I remembered it, a gentle, good detective series and the location is wonderful. An easy way to pass time in the evening.
