Product Description

In the popular 80s crime series of Bergerac, Jim Bergerac (John Nettles, who went on to star as Inspector Barnaby in Midsomer Murders) is a recovering alcoholic, divorcee and father to a young daughter. He is a Detective Sergeant with the Bureau des Etrangers, a department for non-residents on the Channel Island of Jersey. A true maverick, Jim, likes doing things his own way and consequently doesn't always carry out his investigations in the traditional manner, the way his boss might like.

Bergerac ran for a decade from 1981 to 1991 with nine series and six specials.

Series five saw Bergerac back on screen after a year-long break and was made up of nine episodes including a Christmas Special. It aired in early 1987.

Episode 1 : "The Memory Man"
Episode 2: "Winner Takes All"
Episode 3: "Root and Branch"
Episode 4: "Desirable Little Residence"
Episode 5: "The Deadly Virus"
Episode 6: "S.P.A.R.T.A."
Episode 7: "Thanks for Everything"
Episode 8: "Poison"
Christmas Special: "Treasure Hunt"

As uncompromising as ever, Bergerac continues to do things his way, occasionally falling foul of his superiors as he does so. And the beautiful island of Jersey is still a magnet for the mixed assortment of eccentric and notorious crimimals, ensuring that Jim is kept busy...

I remember watching Bergerac when it was first show on tv many years ago. The fifth series is by far the best of all the series. So far each series got better and better with the fourth series being almost as good. Sadly things started to go downhill after this and the quality was never achieved again. The stories are well written with the episodes Poison, The Deadly Virus and Root And Branch being the highlights.

Once again certain edits have been made but it doesn't spoil the enjoyment of the episodes, after all this is the only way we can watch the series unless you have cable.

One final plus the BBC have scrapped the cheap cardboard packaging and replaced it with nicer plastic casing which is alot more durable. So settle down and enjoy a classic piece of BBC tv nostalgia.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another good series 17 Sep 2007
By Dave
This series continues the high standards of the previous series, the minor edits don't distract from the storylines unlike series one on DVD.The episodes are all well written with some good humour thrown in from time to time. The episode Poison is particulary excellent about freemasons as is Root and Branch. This is high quality drama in interesting settings, well worth buying.I think Bergerac got even better with the next two series, lets hope the DVD's include the christmas specials which were very well made.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bergerac series 5 - German release 16 Feb 2014
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Series 5 of Bergerac is my favourite season. I remember watching this series when it was first shown of tv back in the 80's. John Nettles (Midsomer Murders), Louise Jameson (Doctor Who) and Terrance Alexander (The Avengers) lead the cast in this fantastic series. All the episodes in series 5 are excellent being well written and with an impressive guest cast including Michael Gambon from the Harry Potter films.

This is the German dvd release. The picture quality is excellent as is the sound. The writing on the dvd cover and disk menu is in German but the dvd plays in English Language with removable subtitles. There are 3 disks in this release with a card board fold out dvd cover which is nicely illustrated. So all in all an excellent dvd release which can be enjoyed by both German and English viewers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bergerac 24 April 2014
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
My collection is now up to Series 5 (& I intend to buy the full set). My dad was a fan of the island of Jersey, holidaying there before he was married & it was great to see such beautiful scenery before I managed to go there, myself. We even managed to see some of the filming on one trip. A neighbour had been a friend of Terence Alexander from childhood & told us of Terry's 'game' of mentioning Arthur in some of the parts he played. When 'Bergerac' was on TV, we would get a phone call to say "Terry's mentioning me tonight" & we'd listen out for him to be mentioned as a fellow card-player or race-goer in the series. Its repeat on TV on a regular basis shows how much it is still enjoyed.

I missed many of the episodes when Bergerac was shown onTV. If there is anyone the same then this is the way to make up, I bought the whole lot in a boxed set and watched the whole lot over three days.
