I thought that this was just another way of selling more copies of Heaney's translation, and probably it is, but the selection of images is excellent, and the overall effect of the juxtaposition of image and text really does deepen the experience of the poem. I was particularly impressed with the photo of twisted ice (next to the description of the melting of the giant sword). The pictures help to immerse the reader into the world of the poem in a very effective way.

I read the Old English version of Beowulf as a young student and loved the story back then. A recent radio production airing Seamus Heaney reading his modern English translation of the ancient tale encouraged me to buy this book. Beautifully produced and exquisitely illustrated, it enhances the reading experience and has taken pride of place in my bookcases.

not as exciting as the film but probably more accurate as regards the original. very readable and enjoyable. If it is the only version you ever read it will be enough.

Pictures and additional text added by someone with an interest and passion for the subject, rather than just a way to shift more units. Adds to the experience of this translation. The hardback is a nice thing to own. The original version in old english (available elsewhere) was too hard for me to read - and so I did not find enjoyable. Reading this fine version allows you to go back to the first with enough understanding to make more sense of it. Have loved Heaney's work since school days.
