5.0 out of 5 stars Valuable and Good Value 3 Feb 2013
By P. H. Cartwright VINE VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Why would anybody in the 21st century be remotely interested in the activities and products of a long-defunct car manufacturer? They only built 6 cars a week for ten years, never made a profit and finally went hopelessly bust over 80 years ago. However, the car company in question was Bentley Motors, whose very British cars took on the might of the motor industries of France, Germany and the USA to win the Le Mans 24 hour race 5 times in 7 years. Their racing drivers - the "Bentley Boys" - were a bunch of harum-scarum high livers whose exploits off the track were as sensational as on. Their customers were the elite of Society who could only afford the best. The romance lingers on from the "roaring twenties".

The cars themselves were a mixture of very conservative and very advanced engineering. The engines were very large, very low-revving, low compression and unstressed, but they had 4 valves per cylinder in bathtub combustion chambers, those valves driven by an overhead camshaft, a very modern recipe. They were the first British manufacturer to use hypoid gears in the back axle. Chassis were massive and correspondingly heavy. The cars were built to last, were given a 5-year guarantee by the factory and a high proportion have survived. There are probably more 1920s Bentley running today than mass-produced Austins and Morrises of the same decade.

To write a new book about these cars is a daunting task - what possibly new is there to say? The cars have had a dedicated following for years and historians have dug up vast amounts of detail and committed them to paper. Any serious Bentley enthusiast will already have in their library two books, both by Michael Hay: "Bentley Factory Cars 1919-1931" and " Bentley The Vintage Years".

Beautifully illustrated. This book is a good starting point for anyone interested in the history of vintage Bentley's,but can't afford those titles which currently sell for hundreds of pounds.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent overview. 22 May 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This book, as the title indicates, gives a fairly detailed overview of these wonderful motor cars.
I just had a wish for a bit more detail, particularly of the car's original factory specification.
Some of the examples illustrated appear to have been modified over the years.
Otherwise it is a handsome volume, nicely illustrated, well worth a place in a Bentley enthusiast's library.
