Bente Scheller was born and raised in Germany. She studied political sciences, Spanish and Latin American studies and Arabic in Saarbrücken, Madrid and Berlin. After a brief stint in Cairo, she moved to Damascus, Syria, where she worked for the German embassy between 2002 and 2004. As Marshall Memorial Fellow of the German Marshall Fund of the United States she broadened her transatlantic credentials. From 2008 - 2012 Bente Scheller lived in Kabul as the director of the Heinrich Boell Foundation's Afghanistan office. In 2012 she moved to Lebanon and took over the foundation's MENA Office Beirut.
