DVD Description

It’s Christmas on the Costa Blanca and where better to spend it than in Benidorm with some of The Solana's best loved regulars and some very special guests…

There's plenty of tinsel and turkey, but not much peace and goodwill in Benidorm when the Garveys arrive to spend Christmas with Mel and Madge in their luxury hilltop villa. Mel is on business in Marrakech so Madge takes charge of the Benidorm Palace Christmas Spectacular, but talent management was never her strong point and she's not helped by handyman Les (Tim Healy) failing to pick up star act Su Pollard from the airport.

When Donald and Jacqueline arrive with a group of 'close personal friends' including king of the swingers Marvin (Louie Spence) and Noreen brings along a new admirer, Michael is left wondering if he'll get his promised white Christmas after all.

By now one of ITV's biggest hits, Benidorm is a runaway success thanks to the quality of Derren Litten's writing and the performance of the cast.

However in mid 2010 a shadow fell over the series when popular actor Geoffrey Hutchings (Mel Harvey) died suddenly. This threw an enormous obstacle in Litten's path as where to go next. He then set about writing a well balanced episode in which Mel would be laid to rest along with the wonderful actor who had played him. This Christmas Day treat from 2010 would prove to take Benidorm to new limits as it would contain the same poignancy that had worked well in John Sullivan's Only Fools & Horses. The scenes surrounding the news of Mel's death would be both tragic but with ellements of comedy cleverly woven in.

This 'one off' special is of course the appetizer for series four that ITV had lined up for the early 2011 schedules. As well as Mel's departure, many of the other faces of Benidorm are absent this time round leading to the first big cast change of the show. Gone are snooty couple Kate & Martin Weedon, Johnny Vegas's Geoff Maltby is gone along with Chantelle Garvey (they became a couple at the end of series three). Also absent in this episode are the wonderful gay couple Gavin & Troy (but they would be back in series four).

The rest of the Garvey's are back, along with the Stewart's who turn up for Christmas dinner! Noreen Maltby returns minus son Geoff but with a romantic companion Clive (played by Brian Murphy from 'George & Mildred' fame). Tim Healey reprises his role as Les/Lesley Marshall - now becoming a series regular and hotel staff Janey York and Mateo are back.

A great festive episode that offers a slight change of pace to the previous series episodes.

Interesting... 27 Dec 2010
Format:DVD
Was rather disappointed when I saw this on TV last night, the sad death of Geoffrey Hutchings clearly had an effect on the script and obviously being filmed shortly after. Plus the loss of other key characters such as 'The Oracle', the Weedon's and Chantelle and especially no Gavin and Troy made it weaker. Still brilliantly made, great acting but too few core characters remain however the ending made up for it; maybe I should view this as a story of the Garvey's, Madge and Mel first rather than prime Benidorm?

Still on to buy list.

Christmas in Spain 27 Oct 2011
Format:DVD
This isn't 'classic' Benidorm, which for the past few years has been one of my favourite sitcoms, due to both my experience of the area and it just been well written and quite funny. This is a one off special that takes a different pace to the series and focuses on the Garvey family.

It starts a few months after the previous series, Mel and Madge have indeed moved to Benidorm permanently, Madge is holding the fort while Mel is away on business, with the rest of the Garvey clan arriving for Christmas. Of course nothing goes smoothly, or it wouldn't be much of a show!

Many members of the regular cast are of course present, but this episode focuses mainly on the Garveys and to an extent the Stewarts as they try to sort out a misunderstanding for the Benidorm Palace Christmas Show.

The humour is pretty much what you'd expect, the Graveys bicker, the Stewarts make... adult remarks. Typical Benidorm stuff, although without the full cast playing a full part in the plot, it makes the whole thing feel rather flat and doesn't reach the heights the series can at its best.

Saying that, it's not without its funny moments and the ending will bring both a smile and a frown to anyone who knows the characters.

Fans of the series will enjoy as a one off, to make it a purchase... I'm not so sure.
