Book Description

15 July 2006
It's been a long, hard winter in the small Alaskan town of Lake's Edge - and things are about to get even tougher. Lisa McCall, a young and brilliant research scientist, has disappeared out in the wilderness in the middle of a snowstorm. Lisa's sister, Abby, shaken by the news, flies out from England to join the rescue team. Abby and Lisa have been estranged for years, driven apart by a terrible row, both believing there would be time in the future for forgiveness. Now Abby must face up to the fact that her sister may be gone forever. As soon as she arrives at the freezing outpost, Abby knows there's something wrong. Lisa's cabin has been ransacked and her research material is nowhere to be found. It emerges that Lisa was on the verge of patenting an incredible discovery - facing fierce opposition from the oil-dominated energy market. Abby begins to see that Lisa's work has threatened some very powerful people, who are willing to stop at nothing to protect their interests. Abby knows her sister is out there somewhere, battling deep cold and raw terror, while her enemies circle. Risking her own life, she embarks on the dangerous task of locating Lisa before someone else gets to her first...

5.0 out of 5 stars Enthralling 27 April 2007
Very atmospheric with a good insight into Alaska. Huskies, bears, wolves all feature along with the snow and the cold. A real page-turner from the beginning as the plot unravels revealing twist after twist. A very unsociable book in that you want to cut yourself off from everything until you have reached the end. Even afterwards you can't forget the experiences you have been through. One of the best books I have read for a long time.

3.0 out of 5 stars Hard to keep track 24 Feb 2013

Bought this as it was chosen for my book group - good bargain and perfect condition but having read it, I'm passing it on! The wonderful setting in Alaska is well and vividly described and the huskies are gorgeous, but the action is a bit overdramatic and clunky for my liking and I kept getting the sisters mixed up! The book group agreed it would be good for a holiday read, but I wouldn't seek out this author again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Women rule 8 Aug 2006
By L. J. Roberts - Published on Amazon.com
Abby McCall is a garden architect living in the UK when she receives news her sister, Libby, has disappeared. Libby, a research scientist living in Alaska, has developed a device that could make her rich, or dead, if the people hunting her get their hands on it. In spite of a bitter estrangement, Abby battles the bitterness of the Alaskan winter, and memories of a romance gone badly, to rescue her sister.

It's nice to find an author who writes a solid action thriller in which both the protagonists and villains are strong, smart, yet realistic women. At the same time, they are not over-the-top, anti-men either. Elements of the plot were a bit over the top. The romance was somewhat unnecessary and, at times, annoying. Carver is no Stabenow but I definitely found myself quickly turning the pages through this non-stop read.
5.0 out of 5 stars Change of location does Carver good 18 Mar 2011

After her first two books were set in Australia, Carver moves to Alaska for this mystery adventure. A whole new cast of characters from her initial efforts as well. Abby comes to Great White North to find out what has happened to her firebrand sister Lisa after she disappears. Since she lives in Great Britain, she has a hard time knowing which of the people she meets are her sisters friends and which are foes. A quickly plotted effort, but the characters are believable. I liked it more than her first two efforts, and I liked them a lot.
