Product Description

Product Description

The catacombs of ancient Rome served as houses of worship for Jews and Christians. The sewers of Paris yielded gold, jewels, and relics of the revolution. A slave trade thrived in underground chambers along Portland, Oregon's waterfront. Ukrainian Jews found refuge from the Nazis in a system of caves. And thousands of street people have lived in the subway tunnels of New York City. What secrets do the Las Vegas storm drains keep? What discoveries wait in the dark? What's beneath the neon? Armed with a flashlight, tape recorder, and expandable baton, Las Vegas CityLife writer and editor Matthew O'Brien explored the black-and-grey underworld of the Las Vegas flood-control system for four years. This book chronicles O'Brien's adventures in subterranean Las Vegas. He follows the footsteps of a psycho killer. He braces against a raging flood. He parties with naked crackheads. He learns how to make meth, that art is most beautiful where it is least expected, that in many ways, he prefers underground Las Vegas to aboveground Las Vegas, and that there are no pots of gold under the neon rainbow.

A book about Vegas's storm drains?! This is a remarkable book - as deep and dark as the tunnels O'Brien spent a summer exploring. I am a regular visitor to Las Vegas and never imagined this world beneath my feet. O'Brien's book reveals hopelessness and dreams - misery and humour despite the conditions. I enjoyed the way O'Brien wove references to other tunnels (those of the Viet Cong, the Rome catacombs and Portland's Shanghai Tunnels). Like O'Brien I wondered how the poverty of the tunnels could exist beneath mega-wealth? As O'Brien explains: "In America, poverty always bows at the feet of corporate wealth.

worth every penny 26 Oct 2010

An inspiring book that deals with issues unknown to many of the millions of visitors that Vegas welcomes every year. A real insight into what is really happening underneath all the glamour and riches. The author has conveyed the honest truth of what happens when it all goes wrong in a gambling city, how the promise of wealth quickly slides into a struggle of terminal addiction. The characters interviewed appear more upbeat and positive than many of those above ground who are surrounded by the luxuries of today.
I truly enjoyed reading this book, it motivated my university dissertation and really opened my eyes to how life isn't always peach in a city that very much connotes otherwise.

A strange and fascinating account of a as Vegas journalist's explorations of the storm drain tunnels which network beneath the casinos and glitzy hotels of the dream capital of America. The prose style is simple, but the life - human and animal - that the writer encounters as he paddles, crunches and crouches through the concrete labyrinth is engrossing. Just when I thought I had read enough, another troglodyte would appear, with his story and encampment, and I would be gripped again. Straight reporting of some crooked tunnels, and even more distorted lives.
