On her 14th birthday, Christy is given a cross necklace by her older sister Vanessa and as a treat is allowed to drive Vanessa's car. A terrible accident occurs and Vanessa is terribly burnt after being trapped in the car. She survives for a few weeks then dies. At her funural, Christy hears noises coming from within the coffin, and undergoes a breakdown. Six years later, Christy returns to her family home, after spending the time away recovering from a personality disorder, and attempting to lead a normal life. However, she is determined to get to the bottom of her sisters death, and is convinced secrets are being kept from her. What Christy uncovers is a terrible web of deceit and comes under suspicion herself when people close to her start to die.
I'm not sure that this can be classed either as a horror film or a thriller. Its probably both, crossing the borders of both genres. What I can say with complete certainty is that this is an excellent little film, that builds up considerable tension as dark secrets are uncovered, and there is a mounting feeling of unease as Christy delves deeper into her families past. Whether you will enjoy or despair of the ending will probably depend on what expectations you have of the film, but I thought it tied up the story very well. The acting performances are all excellent, especially Nora Zehetner as the troubled Christy, and there is a particularly eerie musical score that benefits the film no end.
Please ignore the negative reviews as this is a very fine film. 4 out of 5

i had really low expectations going in to this movie.mainly because of the words MTV films appearing on the screen.so i was really surprised at how well done this psychological suspense thriller was.i found it very atmospheric, and suspenseful.there weren't a lot of cheap scares.it was intelligent, and well written,in my opinion.the ending was unexpected.i was also very impressed with the acting.Nora Zehetner as Christy was very good, but Matthew Settle as John really impressed.basically,my opinion of MTV films went up several notches after this film was over.for me,Beneath is a well deserved 4/5

This 79 minute TV movie is described as a "horror-thriller that will take you to the depths of darkness"; I can only assume this means the bottom of the dustbin where it belongs. The basic premise of the plot is quite interesting but the script and direction ruin any chance of tension. Characters appear and disappear without engaging either interest or sympathy and the acting of Nora Zehetner is so wooden she makes Richard Gere seem human.

For the majority of the film nothing frightening happens apart from a couple of telegraphed 'jump' moments (presumably to stop a potential audience from starting a mexican wave out of boredom). I kept watching until the end, while flicking through a magazine, more to see how bad it would get than any particular interest in the characters. It's a shame because, in the hands of a capable director or cast, a decent story might not have been wasted; the final chase sequence is reasonably effective but the acting makes the ending more laughable than sad.

Avoid.
