I have never seen the film, but was first introduced to this score, as part of the magnificent series of "Classic Film Scores" recorded in the 1970s by the National Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Charles Gerhart. He arranged this score into a 15 minute suite, which, with Dolby stereo, blew me away.

This recording conducted by the composer, Bernard Herrmann, has a lot going for it. It is performed as the composer intended and, presumably is the actual soundtrack recording for the 1953 film. It is early cimema stereo and cannot compare, sonically, to the later Gerhart recording. Nevertheless, after a few minutes, I had become used to the older soundstage and thoroughly enjoyed it.

If you are looking for up to date sound and recording techniques, you may be disappointed, but if you are a fan of Bernard Herrmann's film scores, then this is for you.
