A piece of music whose second movement hits a spot right in centre of the soul. Every time.
Heard this at the time almost unknown piece in the UK, when a group of teachers from the Music Academy of Ukraine played it at a concert in a Brighton Music Festival. Took 3 years to track down the score, and til now to find a recording. A bonus that the conductor is a descendant of the composer.

When I was a kid, my violinist father was always complaining about the world of music being overloaded with Bendas. I wasn't sure what he was on about back then, but I understood when I saw this CD (part of the 'Complete Benda' series). The conductor is a Benda and the composers are all Bendas too! Is there anyone in classical music who isn't a Benda?!

Brilliant music and performance 9 Jun 2009

I praise Naxos for providing us with such gems as this. The concertos on this CD are all brilliant pieces that will be immediately appealing - just listen to the samples provided by Amazon. I knew Josef Suk from old Supraphon recordings and his playing in these recordings is a joy to hear. I have no idea why these concertos are not performed more often. Highly recommended.

Glorious family music of Benda 12 Nov 2011
By GEORGE RANNIE - Published on Amazon.com

The Benda family`s musical attributes are very evident in this marvelous Naxos recording of Jan Jiri and Frantisek (Benda brothers) 18th century compositions for solo violin and orchestra. The three (3) concertos by the aforesaid composers (2 by Frantisek and 1 by Jan Jiri) are in three (3) movements (two fast and one slow) sounding to be in the early "classical period" of music with spirited fast movements and tender/stately slow movements. All of the music sounding really marvelous on this fantastic recording with the slow movements being most lovely and plaintive sounding.

Playing wonderfully are Josef Suk and Ariane Pfister violin soloist accompanied greatly by the Suk Chamber Orchestra sensitively directed by still another Benda, Christian Benda who is a contemporary member of the musical Bendas. All in all, I really enjoyed this very good sounding recording.

This is a combination of several Bohemian music families together - tradition spanning over three hundred years. Benda's composer from 17th century, one of them married Brixi's wife, now conducted by another Benda composer of 20-21st century, played by another Benda and Josef Suk (his great uncle was Josef Suk - composer, who married Antonin Dvorak's daughter). Enjoy listening to music that was brewing for such a long time.
