Also new to the projector game. Currently have a 60" Plasma TV and was investigating getting a larger one, but the price for 75"/80" tvs quite prohibitive, notwithstanding the sheer size of the beasts! The current lay-out of our living room with the 7.1 speakers etc really pointed to a short throw projector. Trialled a BenQ W1080ST at Bath Richer Sounds and was immediately sold on the quality and crispness (and size) of the picture. The non-negotiable element (with she-who-must-be-obeyed) was that the screen and projector had to be able to be removed/hidden when not in use.
So, purchased a £50 90" 'portable' screen (stand-mounted), the projector (direct from BenQ (£720 delivered)), two 144Hz 3D glasses and a 5M HDMI lead. The screen gets put in front of the TV, and the projector sits on a height adjustable stand in front of the settee. Early days, but the picture in 2D and 3D is vivid and colourful. Watched the 'Titanic: 100 years in 3D' and this looked amazing. I was a bit dubious of the 3D capability of this projector, thinking it was a gimmick. How wrong can you be. 'Top Gun' looks awesome in 3D on a 90" screen, as does Titanic. Just as good with 2D blu-rays as well, with Zulu looking like it was shot yesterday, not 50 years ago.
All in all, looks like a relatively cheap way to go massive!

I've never had a home projector before so it was all new to me. I have it in my living room and it projects a 2.5m screen no problem. For the first time I have been able to distinguish between HD and non HD. It really is fantastic. also the projector is less than 2m from the screen and mounted on the ceiling. No need to worry about lighting - the screen lights up the whole room. At the moment I am just projecting onto a white wall and it is terrific. Football is brilliant. So are films. It is also fairly quiet - don't really notice the fan noise at all. I would recommend to anyone who would like a large TV. Its half the price of a smaller TV.
