I bought this monitor as a temporary, emergency replacement for an iMac that was beyond repair (thanks, gravity!) - it had speakers, a USB hub and several inputs with a freakishly high contrast ratio - plus, it looked like something that Apple would make, so it would match my MacBook Pro perfectly. I really wasn't expecting much at this price, maybe some cheap plastic and a screen not worth looking at but wow... I really do mean WOW! This is no longer a temporary monitor - its my main that takes pride of place.

Firstly, the build quality of the thing. The base is brushed stainless steel, the silver strip under the monitor is also stainless steel and the leg it stands on is also metal with a mirror/chrome surface. The black plastic pieces of the monitor also fair very well. The back is a little creaky but better than the usual - its nice and glossy and doesn't flex under pressure. The black bezel is very thick black plastic that doesn't budge with pressure. For this price its very well put together and feels like it will last for a long time.

Secondly, the speakers. The speakers are not a patch on those inside an iMac or an Apple Cinema Display since they lack a subwoofer and are only 3 watts rather than 20. However, when playing audio via HDMI they are very clear, only distort at hilariously loud volumes (the speakers are freakishly loud at 50, let alone full blast! 20 to 25% is a comfortable listening level for me) and, with the bass boost setting in iTunes, sound perfectly acceptable for watching videos and listening to music.

Lastly is the display panel itself. Its not an IPS display (you'd never get one this big at this price), but its not a rubbish TN panel either.

If you're wondering whether a 27" monitor is too big for you, stop wondering. It isn't. The senses of space and clarity you get with a monitor this size are great, so if you've got the room then go for it.

When it comes to the state of LCD technology, it can be a bit confusing. Basically, there are three main types of panel: (in order from best to worst) IPS, VA and TN (don't worry about what these initials stand for). The EW2730 features a VA panel, placing it firmly in the middle; it's not as good as an IPS panel, but not as bad as a TN. The picture on my unit is excellent, with deep contrast, decent viewing angles and no leakage from the LED backlighting. The settings do need to be tinkered with though; I found that turning off the AMA function (BenQ's proprietory technology for reducing ghosting) actually improved the picture.

The EW2730's build quality is great. Unlike other monitors which have finishes that are metallic in name only, this monitor's base is solid metal. There are 2 HDMI ports, DVI-D, VGA and audio in/out. In addition, connect the supplied USB cable from the port on the back of the monitor to your computer, and voila: your computer instantly has four more USB ports (located on the monitor's left-hand side). There's enough power going to these ports for things like a webcam, recharging MP3 players and running an external DVD writer - an excellent feature for a monitor.

There are only a few (fairly minor) things I dislike about the EW2730. The main control buttons are on the back, which means groping around and feeling for the one you're after; I would've preferred touch-sensitive buttons on the front.

I would have given this monitor 5 stars in a heartbeat if it had a higher resolution.
The Picture itself is amazing, playing games on this is a treat from any angle.
My only issue is for 1920x1080 for a 27" monitor is just too low a resolution, everything on the screen looks huge, not so bad if you're poor of sight but a real headache otherwise.

If you're getting this JUST for playing games and movies then go for it, if you plan on using this as a regular PC monitor you will need higher resolution.

I was looking for a larger 27" monitor than my previous 20" widescreen as multi spreadsheets were pretty cramped on the old one. A quick sort by price on Amazon brought up this one which looked like good value and has good reviews.

The reviews are accurate, this is a solid monitor with a high build quality and a great picture, I just feel that the resolution slightly lets it down, for spreadsheets and photo editing the image is too big. I'm setting 70% zoom ratio to get around this. Probably not a big issue for most people but be aware if you're using this for office work.

The menu system is clunky and the USB ports look messy when cables are plugged in but at this price the monitor is a great buy, built in speakers are a massive plus and it looks good, not flashy just quality.
