In June 2010 I visited Ben Nevis and hiked up the pony track to the summit. This was my first visit to Scotland and I intend to return to the same area next summer for more adventurous walks and scrambles as my experience, and fitness, improves. At the time I took 1:50000 and 1:25000 Ordnance Survey maps with me. These are excellent maps for most areas of Britain, however, the terrain around here is complex on a very fine level and most of it is lost in the OS maps.

I bought this and another Harvey map a month later for future use. This one shows very fine detail in an easy to read print format at 1:25000 scale and has a summit map at a clear, fine 1:15000 scale. Bearings for summit navigation in poor visibility are given alongside.

I highly recommend a combination of this map with an OS map.

I used this map to walk up Ben Nevis via the Carn Mor Dearg arete route.

Good points: clear and uncluttered. As well as the map of the area in 1:25000 scale, it has a useful close-up of Ben Nevis itself in 1:12500 which clearly marks where the dangerous cliffs are, and gives you the compass bearings for walking off the summit in a whiteout.

Could be improved: a bit TOO simple in places which could do with more detail. e.g. the steep slope due south of the summit is depicted simply as 'rocky ground / scattered rock and boulders', which is what you'd expect on a mountain. In fact it's really loose rock, quite treacherous with a risk of triggering serious rockfall, which isn't apparent from the map. The OS map gives a better impression of what the terrain is actually like.

If I was going back to Ben Nevis I would take this map for its good points, BUT I would check my route against the OS map first and make a note of any extra detail. I might take the OS with me too as a back-up.

Item came very quickly and was just as described. Being printed on waterroof paper was a nice touch. However, I wasnt overly keen on Harvey's mapping, finding it a little cluttered and unclear. Maybe I've been conditioned to OS maps, but do find them more straightforward.
