4.0 out of 5 stars Quick Reviews! 21 Sep 2010
By carlosnightman VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD
Jackson's second solo album (while he was still in The Jackson 5) garnered the success which was missed on his debut. The album doesn't stray too far from what can be found on GTBT, mixing pop and R&B, but it features the Oscar Nominated title track which much of the success can be attributed to. We get the usual blend of covers from some of rock and Motown's biggest names- The Corporation, Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder etc, but as with all of his early solo work it is Michael's delivery and overall performance which turns even the most average of songs into something special. The problem is that when he reaches the heights of performance with a great song, not much else on the album can compare to it so there is a catch 22. So this is another album with a few very good songs, and a few average ones made better by Jackson's vocals.

`Ben' opens the album strongly with Jackson singing the Oscar nominated title track for a horror film about a rat. Listening to the song though you couldn't tell that this has anything to do with scares or vermin, its lyrics about misunderstood friendship and gentle tones merging to create an endearing single. This was Jackson's biggest and probably most acclaimed single of his youthful period and one which stands up today thanks to it's simple arrangement, mix of melancholy tenderness, and it's avoidance of any fad production or instruments. Of course Jackson's performance is top notch.

`Greatest Show On Earth' increases the pace for this oft overlooked song. The song shifts in pace and tone with a variety of melodies and styles which don't always work. Jackson's vocals counter most of the flaws of the song but it isn't one which stands out.

5.0 out of 5 stars What? This Album isn't great! 19 July 2009
By D. L

Ben

Sorry! I remember searching the record shops with my Dad the day this album was released. My whole family sat round the record player listening to this when we got it home - we still love it as much today as we did then! It IS a great album!! I just hope that the 'Hello World' set of his complete solo recordings for Motown reminds people Michael was great then and is great now. What is the world going to do now Michael has gone? I know it will be a greyer place. I do agree 'Ben' is a lovely song, well sung.

5.0 out of 5 stars THIS IS PURE MAGIC!! 28 April 2003
Format:Audio CD
This song is a genius at work. This is still 1 of Michaels greatest ever songs, and my advice to you is to buy this. It is brilliant. If you are not aware of what this song is, it is on The Simpsons. Trust me, buy this album. The album its self is not his greatest album by far, but the song 'Ben' is a master piece!! You will believe my every word once you have listened to it. and it is quite cheap!! a bargain at that price!!

5.0 out of 5 stars terrific album--THANK YOU, MICHAEL JACKSON !!! 11 July 2009
By Matthew G. Sherwin - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Ben is a wonderful album by the great Michael Jackson. I have always liked Michael's work when he was young; and this CD certainly has much for his fans and even newcomers to enjoy here. We also hear great backup on Michael's songs performed by other members of Michael's family. The quality of the sound is excellent and the artwork is very well done.

"Ben," the title track, starts off the album with Michael Jackson singing so passionately; he truly displays a talent far beyond his years. His phrasing and his excellent diction enhance his performance all the more; and the rest of the Jacksons also do a sublime job--great! The melody is poignant even all by itself and "Ben" is a total masterpiece by Michael and the others. "The Greatest Show on Earth" has an incredible melody and Michael Jackson's squarely front and center, which is quite all right by me! Michael sings this with panache and I love every minute of it. "The Greatest Show on Earth" also benefits from that awesome musical arrangement; the percussion is well used as are the other instruments.

"People Make the World Go Around" is another emotional song that gets the royal treatment from Michael and the rest; this is another highlight of this album and that's grand. Michael handles complex tempo and key changes like the pro he was and always will be--just one listen proves it! In addition, there's another gem in "We've Got a Good Thing Going;" Michael sings this with all his heart ands soul. He never lets go of a superfluous note and I'm very impressed with the way they all do this number. "Everybody's Somebody's Fool" shines brighter than silver and gold when Michael delivers it even if the lyrics aren't all that happy; and the rest of Michael's family harmonize to perfection--and beyond! Perfect!

There's an excellent cover of "My Girl;" they perform this faultlessly and it's a huge highlight for these fine artists--Michael included, of course. "My Girl" has a strong musical arrangement that displays a lot of creativity and I really like their rendition of "My Girl." "What Goes Around Comes Around" is both cute and moving; Michael performs this flawlessly and you can tell he really delves deep into the lyrics of the ballad in order to make it as emotional and moving as possible--what an artist Michael was!

"In Our Small Way" is equally special; this is another sweet song that features Michael in the spotlight and I could never tire of hearing Michael and the others deliver "In Our Small Way." For a faster tempo, all you have to do is advance one track and listen to "Shoo-Be-Doo-Be-Doo-Da-Day" by Stevie Wonder. "Shoo-Be-Doo-Be-Doo-Da-Day" is really well done and it has that Jackson flavor to it that always makes me smile. The CD then ends very nicely with Michael Jackson performing "You Can Cry on My Shoulder." Awesome!

Michael Jackson will never be forgotten; he clearly lives on forever through his music. I highly recommend this for his fans and newcomers just getting into Jackson's music will appreciate this album, too.

I bought this album for my mother shortly after Michael Jacksons death. She has nothing but good things to say about it so I guess it was a good buy.
