Product Description

Album Description
One of the Wolfe Tones' most traditional albums, 1993's Belt of the Celts dispenses with the electric instrumentation and stylistic experiments that the group had experimented with for the last several years, returning to a strictly traditional instrumental palette of banjos, mandolin, pipes, and other acoustic instruments, and placing their always-remarkable four-part harmonies squarely in the center of the songs. These fourteen tunes are remarkably strong- from the ballads, "Bold Robert Emmett" and "The Boys of Barr Na Sraide," to the sparky social commentary of the witty "Some Say the Divil Is Dead" and "Quare Things in Dublin." As always, lead singer Tom Byrne and crew invest each of the songs with the fervor of true believers and the tenderness of born romantics. It won't change the minds of those who don't care for the Wolfe Tones' characteristic mix of Celtic folk and regional politics, but fans will be most pleased

5.0 out of 5 stars Not the kind of Irish music you'd hear on the wireless, 1 Nov 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Belt of the Celts (Audio CD)
This is not typical Irish folk music. Sure the music sounds similar, but the words are a little more provocotive.

The Wolfe Tones (as you'd guess from the name, if you know who Wolfe Tone was) are devout republicans, and many of the songs are dedicated to leaders of the fenian movement.

If you follow the Rangers and think Ian Paisley is one step down from God, you will not like this disc. If your normal pub songs are 'God Save Ireland' and 'A Nation Once Again' you will more likely than not love it.

As this is not included in the description, the track listing is as follows:
1 Misty Foggy Dew
2 Quare Things In dublin
3 The Fairy Hills
4 Connaught Rangers
5 Bold Robert Emmet
6 Hare In The Heather
7 Tá Na Lá (A version of Níl Na Lá)
8 Some Say The Devil Is Dead
9 General Monroe
10 Hurlers March
11 West Asleep
12 The Boys of Bárr Na Sthraide
13 Rose Of Mooncoin
14 Rory O'Moore

4.0 out of 5 stars Under Rated, 28 Oct 2006
For a long time now I feel that any proud Irishman or woman should open their minds to the Wolfe Tones styles and brand of music. For years it has been OK (or even cool)for the Dubliners, Christy Moore or even going back as far as John McCormack to sing rebel songs. And people flocked to see them.
What was the stigma with the Wolfe Tones? Why were they banned from the airwaves and the airplanes?
Lovers of traditional Irish Mmusic, folk, and ballads could do a lot worse than to try out this album. It features everything. Regardless of their image, or their taboo status, one should listen and feel the emotion in their songs.
I thought I knew a lot of Irish ballads until I opened up to the Wolfe Tones and got thought a leson.
Sure they dont have a Luke Kelly, but Tommy Byrne is as good as any lead singer, way ahead of Ronnie Drew.
Explore the talent of the Wolfe Tones.
