Book Description

Private Investigator Ryan Kyd and his sultry associate Carly Bloom have a less-than-conventional relationship. But when strait-laced MI5 agent Crispian Hunt enlists them for a job that they are in no position to refuse, that quickly become the least of their worries.

Hunt sends them to Spain on what he claims will be little more than a government-funded vacation. But Kyd soon realises that there is more to this case than an “all expenses paid holiday” to the Costa Del Sol.

He and Carly are being sent to track down Constantin Stere - a Moldovan scientist from Porton Down who has been working on a secret formula. Stere has cut his ties with MI5, left the country and is threatening to sell his latest breakthrough to the highest bidder.

With the Russian Mafia, Mossad, and any number of terrorist groups fighting to get hold of Stere’s formula, Kyd and Carly soon find themselves in the middle of a dark conspiracy involving the deadliest players in the international underworld.

Can Ryan and Carly find Stere – and the potential weapon of mass destruction – first?

Or will they be too late to save the world from Stere’s devastating chemical agent?

‘Below Zero’ is a gripping crime thriller featuring the private investigator Ryan Kyd. It is the follow-up to the best-selling 'Business Is Murder', 'Hand of Darkness' and ‘Dead of Winter’.

This is the first book I've read in the Ryan Kyd series but will definitely go back and read the others. Even though there are references to the previous adventures had by The Ryan Kyd Private Investigations Agency, this book works perfectly well as a stand-alone novel.

The action is fast paced but realistic, as Ryan and Carly hare across Spain and Morocco, chased by various bad guys. Plot twists are abundant and keep the reader guessing, whilst the tongue-in-cheek humour throughout the text, stops the action from becoming too heavy.

You can't help but like the main character, Ryan. A self-proclaimed optimist, he's hopelessly attracted to his glamorous assistant Carly, with little to no hope of the relationship developing outside of the job.

Although I would have liked to have seen a little more development of Carly's background, the witty chatter between the two protagonists makes up for a lack of individual substance.

Great, fast paced detective drama, filled with gritty realism and a wonderful sense of humour.

5.0 out of 5 stars Below Zero ... is hot! 18 May 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Having read, and thoroughly enjoyed, all of the previous Ryan Kyd mysteries I downloaded this as soon as I could and even before the end of the first chapter I knew I was in safe hands. Roger Hurn’s humorous, fluent style creates an easy, entertaining and exciting read. The plot proceeds at a terrific pace and is full of twists and turns, it is truly a compelling, edge-of-the seat narrative that makes for a perfect Kindle Single.

I would say that in ‘Below Zero’ there is change of emphasis, whereas all the previous Ryan Kyd mysteries had been investigations this is more of an action thriller in which Ryan and Carly are pursued in Morocco and Spain by a variety of dangerous men who want something that has come into their possession.

The author writes with considerable wit and humour but this should not belie the fact that the story is very well researched in terms of locations, organisations and procedures. Clearly a lot of preparation has gone into the writing of this novella. Roger Hurn frequently brings a smile to the reader’s face with witty and outrageous similes or with sharply drawn observations such as. ‘He was the kind of guy who only had teeth so he could lie through them’. He tantalises and teases the reader with the ongoing developments in the Ryan/Carly relationship; and what a great character she is … it is not just the locations that make this story hot!

Roger Hurn is the master of dialogue and this adventure unfolds at a breathless pace, great stuff! To reiterate what another reviewer said – this is a 5 star story from a 5 star writer and if you haven’t read the other Ryan Kyd mysteries then I strongly recommend that you do. He wont let you down!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great stuff!! 16 Jun. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is my favourite so far of the Ryan Kyd thrillers.. the interaction between Ryan and Carly is snappy and sparky, the plot twists and turns to keep you on your toes and the locations have that 'the author's been there and knows the place' feel to them. Loved the bit in Spain with the British villain.. and love the way the Queen has an in absentia starring role! :)
It's a real skill to get plot details, characterization and humour into a shortish format, but Mr Hurn does it all with a deftness of touch that's admirable - another great KIndle Kyd!

Thought this was a highly enjoyable read. Hurn has a brilliant sense of humour. His attention to the plot and characterisation has definitely paid off, as the storyline is highly believable and engrossing.
Perfect if you want a gripping holiday read or something for the commute. You won’t be able to put it down.
