Book Description

Jun 2002 Center Point Platinum Fiction (Large Print)
Bestselling author Linda Lael Miller has captured the magic of love in more than thirty magnificent novels. Now, writing as Lael St. James, she embarks on a charming adventure of courtly love and loyalty in glorious medieval England. Sweet, sheltered Gabriella Redclift is betrothed to Sir Cyprian Avendall, whom she has met but once. When Gabriella is abducted in the Devonshire countryside en route to her nuptials, her innocence -- and her dream of true love -- hang in the balance. Morgan Chalstrey is not the rogue bandit that he appears. Seeking vengeance on Avendall for his role in the undoing of Morgan's beloved Rebecca, he means Gabriella no harm; her possible ruin is unavoidable, if unfortunate. But as Gabriella discovers that her fiancé is far from chivalrous, she might become a willing participant in her own corruption. And Morgan, who had sworn off love forever, may find that innocent Gabriella's love, and not revenge, is the one thing worth fighting for.

4.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful romance from the Middle Ages 5 Sep 2002
Format:Mass Market Paperback
"My Lady Beloved" is a charming first book of Lael St James's trilogy. The story is set in 14th century England and it's a beautiful tale of courtly love and women's life in those times.
Gabriella Redclift lives in a convent with her two younger sisters Meg and Elizabeth. They come from a good but impoverished noble family. They live their life in sheltered innocence dreaming about their happy future as a lady of a wealthy lord and his castle.Sir Cyprian Avendall decides to marry Gabriella and he sends his people to St. Swithin's Abbey to bring his bride home to Cornwall. Gabriella has her doubts about this marriage and she is sad to leave her sisters but she is strong and knows that her marriage to Avendall will help to marry Meg and Elizabeth as well. The journey doesn't start well. Gabriella and her chaperone Dame Johanna are abducted by Morgan Chalstrey who wants to revenge his fiance who he believes died because of Avendall. So the adventure begins. They travel long and the conditions are very hard as they were in the Middle Ages.
Gabriella despises Morgan from the beginning and opposes him at every turn. She is also attracted to him and she is starting to lose her innocence and ideology about the world. Morgan is a bitter hardened warrior just back from the wars with France.
He doesn't want to love Gabriella he just wants revenge but Gabriella's innocence and courage pulls him to her. He takes her to his castle and they make wonderful love. Their love is not an easy one.Gabriella gets to know the real Morgan when he opens his heart to her. She falls in love with the warrior who shut his heart for a long time. She wants to be his lady and she does everything for his love.Morgan hasn't got a high opinion on women and he doesn't care about Gabriella's feelings at the beginning.

1.0 out of 5 stars MY LADY BELOVED 11 Aug 2001
By Linda - Published on
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Normally I love the books by Linda Lael Miller. This particular book, written as Lael St. James, was a book that I tried for three days to read. I just couldn't get into it. I finally just put it down. I thought it moved very slowly. I much prefer the western historicals that Linda writes.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Story - Great Characters 14 Jun 2001
By A Customer - Published on
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I have been a fan of the author since she wrote series romances long ago. This story reminds me of some of my favorite novels that she has written. The characters are fully developed and likeable - or unlikeable in the case of the main character's evil betrothed.
The main female character is a woman whose life has long been ruled by duty to her family and her sisters. She is marrying in order to insure that her family is cared for financially, even though she does not like her betrothed. When she is kidnapped by a man who she finds attractive and exciting, she decides to live for herself and falls in love.
The story circling around these two lovers is interesting as well and although not completely unpredicatable, it is presented in a fresh and interesting manner. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is that the storyline at the abby with her sisters was hard to follow and did not seem to fit with the timeline of the rest of the story. However, I can't wait for the next book in this series!

1.0 out of 5 stars A disappointment! 19 Nov 2001

I normally really like Linda Lael Miller books. However, this book attempts to give frontier motivations and actions to the English Middle Ages. Not believable.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Beloved Book 7 July 2001
By A Customer - Published on
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Linda Lael Miller writing as Lael St. James has done it again! This book made me laugh, and cry, which to me is a sign of a great book. Morgan and Gabriella's story will capture your heart after the first few chapters.
Set in England 1369 Gabriella is abducted by Morgan seeking vegeance on an old foe Avendall whom Gabriella is betrothed to. But in the end he has captured his Lady Beloved. A good book to add to your summer reading list.
