When I started belly dancing 20 years ago, I tried to learn from a book. It is not the easiest way of learning this art! I wish the book I had had then had been more like this one here. With patience and determination, you should be able to follow those instructions, because they are clear in text and photos. I'm a professional teacher and performer of belly dance now, so I can talk with some authority. The section on history is thin, the section on dieting somewhat unrelated, but if you want an instruction book this is the best in the market. So if you can't find belly dance classes locally, and prefer books to videos, or just want that extra input, I do recommend this book.

It is worth getting as part of a Belly Dance literature collection, but an incredibly dated text. Bless Tina Hobin and the early Belly Dance pioneers of England. Tina is of special interest for the time during which Belly Dance started to be established as a "past-time" and in Hobin's case a "career choice". The photos are cheesey and great fun, the language describing the cultural origins and associations of the dance very Orientalist and out-of-date and out-of-touch. But is marks a time, pre-Hilal and Buonaventura when these dancers were appearing on the regional and national circuit and people were first discovering the dance. Tina Hobin unfortunately attempted to recreate this book, which in it's day was very popular, by producing an instructional DVD in 2005 which was a flop and has received pretty awful reviews. Buy it for a comprehensive Belly Dance book collection but do not bother buying it in order to learn the dance - there are plenty of really decent and excellent DVD Belly Dance tuition available instead.
