Environmental activist and college teacher Nat Bridger(Richard Chamberlain)finds out that one of his students has died in mysterious circumstances. He promises the father of the dead girl he will look into her death. He arrives in the city, lodges with his old friend Stanley Markowitz(John Houseman) who is an environmental consultant for a big phone company. What Bridger finds out is that a big cover up has taken place, and in fact an unknown maniac is using telephones as a deadly weapon, sending electric shocks down the line to kill off various people. Soon Bridger is in terrible danger, as are those around him
This science fiction/horror thriller hybrid may have a ridiculous premise but thanks to some assured direction and good performances it works very well. In fact the scenes where the camera scans silently across a room fixing its gaze on a telephone are particularly effective and quite creepy. The investigations of Bridger into the mysterious events are punctuated by some effectively gruesome murder set pieces as the killer phones up his victims to offer a few last words before offing them.
This Canadian film is quite reminiscant of an early Cronenburg film crossed with that much beloved 70's genre- the conspiracy thriller, and remains a fascinating curio thats needs to be rediscovered. 4 out of 5
