Product Description

Synopsis

Anne Loader's amusing and honest books about life in her family's old Limousin farmhouse, 'A Bull by the Back Door' and 'The Duck with a Dirty Laugh', are a big hit with Francophile readers - who have begged her to continue the delightful saga. 'We've lived every moment with you,' is the most common comment. 'Please tell us what happened next!' 'The Bells of St Paradis' covers the period from August 1998 to April 2000. It introduces new characters and situations as well as describing old friends and familiar places. While Anne and her husband Jack continue to work on the renovation of their 200-year-old French house, under the watchful eye of its late owner, Marguerite, they take time off to make more friendships and enjoy the social life of the community including the colourful medieval fair (where women in wimples use mobile phones) and the sauerkraut supper (where everyone has a good time but leaves the sauerkraut). The animals, as always, take centre stage, too. Meet the gosling who starred at a wedding reception, the diabolical migratory grues, the donkeys confined by a 'psychological' electric fence, and Cedric - the turkey who sang the angelus. For this book, Leonie Press artist Patricia Kelsall has painted several evocative watercolours as well as doing her usual pen and ink drawings.

1.0 out of 5 stars It has the warmth of a letter from an old friend, 21 Dec 2001
This review is from: The Bells of St. Paradis: A Love Affair with the Limousin (Paperback)
This book was a delight to read, a delight in the same way a letter from a dear friend is. Chatty, informative, amusing and also sad at the end. Reading it was like an annual letter at Christmas time updating all a friend's news.

The author's affection for the people, the place, the animals and the character of her French home come across clearly in the detail of her everyday experiences and routine domesticity. There is a warmth such that even in the face of a French storm the sun shines through and even in the death of a dear friend a joy in his life is apparent. This is a great gift to be able to communicate at a personal level through a medium available to everyone.

I particularly enjoyed this book because it is light and readable, a comfortable book to read anytime. When finished I was left wanting the next chapter and further anecdotes from a real world and told without any pretension or gloss, but as it is in all its aspects.

Having a fondness for this genre, I have read many books about setting up a home, or second home in France; this may not be the most dramatic nor possessed of the funniest anecdote but it tells an honest and gentle tale well and I look forward to the next installment, not with excited anticipation, but with the fondness I await another letter from a friend.
