Eccentric and Memorable,

Having read and very much enjoyed Rodenbach's slightly more well known novel 'Bruges-la-Morte' I was pleased to come across 'The Bells of Bruges', another highly original work set in that city in the late nineteenth century. Like its counterpart this book casts Bruges as a kind of ghostly, otherworldly place, and the story is again about an obsessive love affair which has gone wrong and left the main character, this time the town's bell-ringer who lives at the very top of his tower, on the verge of madness.
I am not sure I can claim that this book is a great novel, however it lingers in the mind and keeps the reader gripped throughout, despite the feeling of doom and inevitability about the plot. If you have read 'Bruges la Morte' and enjoyed it then this is an obvious next step - and it should also be worthwhile for anyone who, like me, enjoys discovering relatively forgotten works of literature for themselves.
