Product Description

Product Description

One unique aspect of the British countryside is the sound of church bells being rung. Most countries have bells that are tolled and some have mechanical carillons, but only in Britain is change-ringing, or the ringing of bells in special sequences, so widely practised. Bellringing, which takes place regularly in some six thousand church towers, is regarded by non-ringers as something of a mystique, but in this book the author explains for the layman and the beginner what change-ringing is all about, why it is unique to Britain, and how it was developed. He includes much fascinating information - on famous bells and towers, inscriptions, peal boards and ringers' rules, ringers versus clergy, and a glossary of rining terms.

Enjoyable reading 16 Mar 2009
Format:Paperback
This small book of some 56 pages provides an outline of the history and general composition of English bell ringing. However, of those 56 pages, there are only 8 pages of text given to the methodology of the subject so this book is not a primer for those seeking to learn full-circle bell ringing.

Nevertheless, it is an inexpensive and charming introduction to "the arts and mysteries of the Exercise" of this ancient and fascinating but little-understood thread in the fabric of English life and which is so in need of support.

Ring out some words 22 May 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Good book, covers most or all aspects of Bell Ringing including the unsavory side! Could have more colour photographs in, web links to things like BBC Radio 4 Bells on Sunday and have a free audio CD and Blu-Ray disk as well, or even a website. First published in 1968 and revised [4th] edition 2006. But what do you expect of a book for 1p titled enigmatically "Bells and Bellringing."?

This book is a little gem.
Not an instruction manual, but a breif history and information about British bellringing with lots of interesting information and recommendations.
