Product Description

Product Description

Looking like they might be sidekicks of The Clash on the cover of the April 2003 edition of fRoots magazine, with an extensive interview inside, John Spiers (melodeon) and Jon Boden (fiddle) are the new wave face of British folk music. Their first album for Fellside, THROUGH & THROUGH, grabbed reviews such as "Daringly confronts the traditional way of doing things", "A much needed breath of fresh air in the world of traditional music", "This is the real thing, English folk music with heat and soul". Now they're at it again, pumping new life, a renewed ebullience, into a long tradition. This is folk with attitude by an award-winning duo on the way up. Tracks: Prickle Eye Bush / Sloe Gin Set: Frozen Gin - Vinegar Reel - The Sloe / Courting Too Slow / Dawn Chrous / The Outlandish Knight / Jiggery Pokerwork - Haul Away - Seven Stars / Go And Leave Me / Jack Robinson - Argiers - Old Tom Of Oxford / Copshawholme Fair / Princess Royal - Cuckoo's Nest / Brown Adam / Ginger Up Lustily - Old Woman Tossed Up In A Blanket.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic folk 1 Jun 2004
By Pips
Format:Audio CD
Although I'm not a folkie Through and Through this second offering from Spiers and Boden is everything you could want from a folk album. The artist's own compositions stand out, (particularly the beautiful Dawn Chorus) and mix well with the traditional arrangements. If you haven't seen them live already you are seriously missing out - their website gives details of all of their up coming gigs. http://www.squeezy.fsnet.co.uk/spiers_boden/

Having grown up being a passive victim of folk music because my parents enjoyed it gave me a fairly good impression of what folk music is like. Having heard this latest album from John Spiers & Jon Boden has really converted me. They have a wonderful way of introducing an addictive rhythm to the music and you end up not being able to get the songs out of your head.
Even better is seeing them perform live on stage, this pair make a great duo and really get the crowd going. If at all possible go and see them live - but buy the CD as well!

5.0 out of 5 stars A New Classic Folk album 1 Sep 2003
Format:Audio CD
English Traditional Music has been overshadowed by Irish music's
recent popularity. A new generation of young performers is attempting to rectify this and play the music with new vigour.
Spiers and Boden play the music with power, enthusiam and exquisite taste. Although a duo of fiddle and melodeon and vocals they give a very fine live show that makes electric big bands seem overblown and unecssary.
Jon Boden is very impressive singing and playing fiddle across the tune. Jon Spiers is a superb accompanist. See them live if at all possible. English music may have not been very cool for a while but it stimulates a fierce loyalty its adherents. For those who thought that the day the music died was when Nic Jones had to stop performing there is new hope.
Buy the album it will be a classic of the genre, even if you can't get to a gig. Try to do both
