By Mr. A. G. Liddle VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
Belle Epoque is the first of three comprehensive overviews of classic Rail Band material from the 1970's and 80's which was, until now, ultra difficult to get hold of (I know ... I tried) and usually on vinyl in terrible condition. I first heard the Rail Band through the noble offices of Andy Kershaw (welcome back Andy) and have loved their music ever since. I particularly love their early material which is a divine mix between traditional Malian (Mandinga?) music and a forward- looking vision of where African music can go. And then there's the guitar of Djelimady Tounkara to say nothing of the seemingly endless array of gobsmacking vocalists! Definetly not just for purists and completists but a reminder of just how powerful music by the people for the people can be and yes, John, I too would have loved to be waiting for that train in Bamako!

groove, great singing, great guitar and horn music, drifting from chill to dance - one of 3 double sets..it must have been great to be in bamako, with or without a train to catch in the 70's and early 80's

a long disappointment 16 Sep 2010
By P. Pick
Format:Audio CD
there is very little of real quality on this double cd which has been a big (or long) disappointment. the super rail band has made some excellent music, and very little of it can be found here, on what seems mostly live recordings without their premier star salif keita on vocals. i do not recommend this recording, it is for completists and fanatics only.
