Book Description

9 July 1999
Don Roberto Luciano, boss of the Sicilian Mafia, agrees to be chief witness in the trial of Paul Carolla, who murdered Luciano's firstborn son, Michael, 20 years ago. Despite round-the-clock protection, all the Luciano men are killed the night before a family wedding. The don's wife, Graziella, holds together what's left of the family–daughters-in-law Theresa and Sophia, and Theresa's daughter Rosa–while instructing their lawyer to sell off business holdings. Eventually the women become involved in the business themselves, trying to recover money that's disappeared into Carolla's hands. Following a courtroom shootout, Carolla's adopted son Luka, using his knowledge of organization politics and his mastery of murder, becomes the women's partner and protector. Once the Luciano women discover Luka's secret, however, they implacably take revenge in the ruthless manner of their age-old code, and the strongest of them becomes the new head of the family, the bella mafiosa.

Anybody who has read 'The Godfather' or for that matter any of Mario Puzo's novels is going to love this. This novel is full of everything you would expect from a novel about a Sicilian Mafia family: Love, Honour, Betrayal, Violence, Murder and the occassional tender moment thrown in for good measure! When you first see how long this book is your first reaction will be 'I'll never finish this'. However, this book soon takes a hold of you and you cannot put it down!! I finished it in less than a week and then turned back to the first page and started again. Enjoy it!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bella Mafia - Addicted to this book! 16 July 2004
Format:Paperback
Bella Mafia is the first book that I have ever read, non-fiction or fiction, that centres around the Mafia. The subject is fascinating as are the characters, and while it has it's moments of gore, it is extremely moving. The two Luciano grandsons being shot in their bed, while embracing each other made my stomach lurch, my heart sinking with sadness that all the crime and corruption involving the mafia could touch two innocent children. Really well written. A real page turner with some excellent twists and turns. I totally agree with a previous reviewer though - the back cover gives it away. You are almost waiting for the Luciano men to be killed off to start the story going, when that is only one part of the overall novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book, and adventourous and worth a read. 13 Jun 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I recommend Bella Mafia, to anyone, it is adventurous and action packed, dealing withdrug dealers and a honest family business. In the book it showed how a family stuck together and cared for eachother. Although the Don had arranged nearly all of his sons wives out it lead to dismay and regrets on the Dons wife. Giving evidence knowing there would be a threat to his familyif he gave evidence to get his enemy barred. Although this book was written for older peopelt han my self I enjoyed the book and I read it quickly not to loose track. The book though is very long, so you do have to make spare time, but it is the holidays soon, so miss it and you will miss out. I mean you though males were the bosses well you haven't seen The Luciano widows yet, they can rip you off in a flash!

5.0 out of 5 stars BELLA MAFIA 12 Aug 2003
Format:Paperback
I have never read Lynda La Plante before and this book was a great starting point. Although it was long, it was far from boring and kept you turning the page. I read it in three sittings! My only gripe is that I think the info on the back of the book is too revealing. It tells you that the Luciano men are all killed and matters are left to the women to deal with. This in fact only happens over half way through the book and in my view spoiled it. It would have been much more enjoyable had you not known that all the men were going to croak it! Apart from this, the book is fantastic and includes romance and friendship as well as violence which you would expect from a mafia tale. Don't hesitate - BUY IT NOW!

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Read 25 Oct 2004
By "hifsa"
Format:Paperback
This book was fantastic, i couldnt oput it down, though it was quite long i did enjoy reading it. It is great the way the characters are brought together, the women really come together in the grieving and you really feel their pain and anguish as well as their anger.
I gave this book 4 stars cause i felt that the synopsis reveakled too much, i kept waiting for the luciano men to die apart from that the book is fantastic and i would recommend to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a thriller 13 July 2000
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Bella Mafia - is indescribable to be honest. It's a Great book, packed with adventure, romance and crime. I sincerely recommend it to anyone aged 14 - 100+. It deals with all aspects of crime, from the drug dealers to the murders.. This book displays how a family stuck together and cared for eachother - through thic and thin.. Although the Don had arranged nearly all of his sons wives out it lead to dismay and regrets on the Dons wife. All this lead to devastation. Making the family turn upon the unexpected. Not knowingly. Although this book was written for older people than my self I enjoyed the book and I read it quickly not to loose track. The book though is very long, so you do have to make spare time, but it is the holidays soon, so miss it and you will miss out.To think that males were the bosses well you haven't seen The Luciano widows yet, they can rip you off in a flash!
p/s please note my other review seems to have been ruined for some reason.

5.0 out of 5 stars A 'could not put down' book 12 May 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This has got to be one of the best books I have read in a long time. With every turn of the page you are involved with the characters and feel you are actually there experiencing their problems. It could very well be the 'Godfather' all over again and although there is quite a lot to this book it took me only 5 days to read - I could not put the book down!
