Product Description

1941, the Isle of Dogs. Neglected by their drunken mother, young Bella Doyle and her brother Terry are left to roam the streets, fending for themselves and skipping school with ease. When her mother's boyfriend turns violent, Bella finds refuge with Micky Bryant, a local ne'er-do-well. After the war, Bella marries Micky, helping him run his business as a club owner and manufacturer of illegal hooch. But with her husband falling ever deeper into a life of crime, Bella finds herself out of her depth as she struggles to stay one step ahead of the law, cope with Micky's increasingly wayward behaviour and control her growing feelings for his elder brother, Ronnie. It takes a shocking tragedy for Bella to realize that she must seize control of events in order to escape the squalor of the East End and shape her own destiny.

This book tells the tale of a young girl Bella, who falls in love with the wrong man, Micky. Her youthful infatuation blinds her to the type of man that he is, she is truly blinded by love.
Bella has a hard life, living with her mother and her abusive partner leaves her to run away to the sanctity of the Bryant Family. Bella and her 'simple' brother find themselves indebted to the Bryant family when they save their bacon on many occassions.
This story is a heart warming story, that reminds me much of my adolescent fantasies about the wrong type of men. It is well written and has many twists and turns. A very well thought out and executed book!

Again Carol has managed to make the Isle of Dogs in post-war Britain come alive for us. Bella manages to survive her many tribulations and with the help of her family who hold strong in the end she gets the happiness she deserves.

This was the first of the EAST END SAGA books that I read and enjoyed it so much that I've bought all the others and now just received East End Angel to read. Great books and very true to life. I love reading about the East End, the War and rationing etc. A really brilliant author and I look forward to reading more from her.
