Physical device:
The product is a small, robustly designed device that connects to the computer using a free USB 2.0 port.
It does not require an external mains power adapter to function.
This product is ideal for laptops.
If plugged in to the back of a desktop computer it would still conceal a few nearby connectors. However, this isnt a problem thanks to a bundled USB extension cable (20cm in length)
Software:
For windows 7, the drivers are *not* included on the CD and must be downloaded from the Belkin website. The 32 bit drivers will work on a 64bit version of Windows 7 and installation is simple.
The product had drivers for Linux bundled on the CD, although I have not tested these.
Thankfully, this product does not require installation of any ropey middleware applications that perform no real purpose other than replace functionality of the operating system.
Usage:
On windows 7, this device needs drivers to be installed before it can be used - so is not plug and play out of the box unfortunately. Once drivers are installed the device will function without issue.
The device has 3 blue LEDs on the front, which are amazingly bright in operation (I think it could be used as a torch!).
Unusually, the device does seem to get quite hot - it is noticeable after only a few minutes of operation.
Summary:
Nice little device very handy - robustly designed and bundled with all required accessories. There was not too much packaging to remove either. Works seamlessly once drivers are installed.
Only criticisms are:
CD did not have drivers for windows 7 (although this is not unusual for most electronic products) - if using windows 7, download the drivers from the website before install, to be honest it makes sense to do this anyway for all distributions (since driver CD will normally contain only older, out of date driver versions anyway).
Not a plug and play USB device - since you need to install drivers to use it on windows 7.
