I wanted a wireless USB hub to connect my laser printer into my network. This seemed the most flexible device if a lttle costly. Following the instructions for setup as a wireless hub was very straightforward - took just a few minutes, and worked first time. I plugged a memory stick in as an initial test and it almost instantly connected, and continues to work fine - I'm actually quite impressed with the data transmission rate as well, with no noticeable delays on fairly small files - e.g. loading a high quality digital picture. Then I came to try connecting the laser printer. This was a frustrating process. It recognised the printer almost immediately and asked if I wanted to load the printer driver. I didn't really since it was already loaded, but did so anyway. However, after this, it still failed to connect to the printer. I tried removing the printer driver completely and reinstalling. No joy. I tried, as was suggested in the manual (on CD), altering the settings on my firewall, except my firewall is not one of those used as examples, and so I again failed. At this point, about to give up, I disabled my firewall completely, and achieved a connection with the printer almost instantly. I have subsequently discovered that I can re-enable the firewall and the connection to the print remains until I turn off, or the computer goes into sleep mode. So to use the printer, I have to first disable my firewall for a few seconds, connect ot the printer, and then re-enable the firewall. Slightly messy but only takes a few seconds and works every time.
Other reviews have commented on the unreliablity of the wireless connection, but I have no difficulties with this. The Home Server control program enables you to monitor system status including wireless signal strength. I have my wireless router in one upstairs corner of the house, and the Home server in the diagonally opposite corner of the house, some 15m away with 2 partition walls in between - the signal remains rock solid at 3 bars (out of 5). (I have a Linksys WAG160N router - an excellent product with good signal strength.)
So after my initial frustrations I am well pleased with the Home Server. It does exactly what I wanted it for. I haven't used its more esoteric features related to picture sharing and backup, whcih seem somewhat unnecessary features to me.
