Worth the Money 16 Aug 2005
If you need 7 USB ports its more than likely you will need a powered hub. This is not a particulalry expensive powered hub and works well, but may look expensive compared to non-powered versions. I've been using mine for about 2 weeks and it's priceless as my ADSL USB modem is powered from it, as is my trackerball, FDD and multi-card reader. If, like me, you are using a laptop, a powered hub really is the best solution when you've got this many peripherals plugged in. It also means that I can take my laptop off the desk by unplugging just one USB connection. I'm about to buy a second unit as I've a few additional peripherals to connect, in total I estimate 9 items (MF-printer, trackerball, FDD, card reader, ext-DVD/RW, ADSL Modem, PDA, Film Scanner, ext-HDD) , which still leaves the 4 vertical slots free (for my USB pen and digital camera), plus 1 rear slot on which I will daisy-chain the hubs to maintain the 1-connection to the laptop. Of course if I decide on an ext-keyboard and webcam I still have enough slots on the hub. Being a stacking unit means that 2 barely take any more desk space than 1. It's quite frightening how soon I exceeded the 5-on-board USB slots on this laptop, then the 7 on the hub!

High quality USB hub 27 Jan 2006
As with most Belkin stuff, you pay a bit more for quality and this feels pretty solid with good 1.8m mini USB cable and power supply (ps). A good design too with the vertical ports useful for wireless/bluetooth dongles or flash drives.
Mine does not get hot at all so they have solved this issue.

Only thing is it will NOT work AT ALL without the mains ps. I was hoping it would work without ps with a couple of low power devices, for convenience. I guess they just didn't want to risk people overloading the host port with 7 full power devices!
So for laptop users its more of a USB 'docking station' rather than a portable device. The ps mains plug is relatively large as it has to supply up to 3.5amps.
Still that means you can use it with USB chargers without having your PC turned on or connected.

For those wishing to stack be aware that there is no 'stacking connector', you will have to use a port form the first hub to drive the second, etc., plus you'll need a separate ps for each hub. The vertical ports from the previous hub just poke through the hole in the hub above, so they stack like stairs.

Neat and practical 31 Dec 2005
This neat and unobtrusive unit has streamlined the tangle of USB cables behind my Mac. With only 3 USB 2.0 ports secreted to the rear of the G5 imac, repeatedly switching a host of peripheraries was becoming impractical.

As was expected, plug and play simplicity with OS X (10.3.9) so experienced instant comms with all devices when powered up.

The two ports mounted on the top of the hub allow easy access to devices such as the ipod Shuffle, which is merrily recharging as I type.

No problems experienced with power unit regarding over-heating; it was shipped from Amazon (27/12/05) with the all-in-one unit as described by another reviewer.

Finally, after much Froogling, Amazon came in at a bargain figure for this device, especially when compared to the extortionate price at a certain out-of-town computer retailer.

Still works for me
Knock a star off as it sometimes needs to be power cycled when the USB ports stop functioning correctly. But on the whole, not bad considering I bought this in 2006

I've had two and both have blown! Design Fault Alert!
My first one lasted 18 months before getting hot and blowing my Logitech mouse receiver stick. Bought another one off eBay and it lasted just one day before dying completely. Read more

Great design, but doesn't last long
Good looking hub with the convenience of both horizontal and vertical ports. This hub gets very hot and eventually burns out. Mine lasted 18 months.

Belkin 7-port hub givs up ghost after 7 month
Nice hub, but has ceased working.
All connected items are working so must be the hub.

I did leave it powered up 24 hours per day.

Belkin 7 port
I've had this hub a few months and now has an intermitent fault of losing power. Very annoying when using a printer. The principle is good, shame about the fault.
