The hub looks very nice. It fits perfectly under a Mac mini. However, if you have a new Intel Core2Duo Mac mini, then the cables in the box do not allow you to connect the hub: they are too short. Obviously the position of the Firewire and USB ports had changed from an earlier Mac mini version. I assume that G4 Mac minis should work with these cables.

Also: If you need two Firewire ports permanently, then you should consider a different hub. This hub has one FW port at its back and one at its front. Since you lose the Mac mini firewire port (to connect the hub) you will be left with as many firewire ports on the back of the system as before: 1. You gain one additional port at the front, but I assume this is rather for connecting digital video cameras. Having a cable attached to the front permanently doesn't look great.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad but could fit Mac Mini better 1 Feb 2008
I just bought this and so far it's OK, didn't have any problem connecting the cables to my old-style mac mini. But my mac mini slides around when stood on top of the hub so I've had to blu-tac it down!

It's a shame it's not a slightly better fit for the mac mini style-wise because the idea is lovely. I've got a Lacie external hard drive built for the mac mini which is a perfect match: it has specially shaped casing to fit the mac mini's feet or to stop it from slipping if placed on top, and it even matches the silvery colour. It's a shame this isn't an equally good match.

I daren't look round the back of my computer now, it's such a thicket of cables!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as it should be 19 Dec 2007
Can't quite understand why Belkin didn't design this with the location of the firewire port on the mac mini in mind. The cable that connects the firewire on the mac to the hub is just too short, the hub sits on my mac at an angle.
Also why did they put an LED on the front of it!?

1.0 out of 5 stars Firewire lead too short 5 Dec 2006
Verified Purchase
Beware of buying this if you are using the DVI adaptor for your monitor, since the short firewire lead doesn't connect properly. And there is no way for either enclosed lead to connect if you sit the Hub on top of your minimac. If both leads were about 2 cm longer the problem would be solved.

4.0 out of 5 stars More information for buyers!!! 6 Jun 2007
I am sorry but I just don't recognize the problem the other reviewer had I found the cables entirely adequate for the job in hand. This product is great for adding connectivity to a mac mini as ,certainly for the early ones like mine, this is a weakness.

One thing that is missing from the product overview but is in the instructions in the box is that if your mac mini is running USB 1.1 ports the extension ports will be limited to that too. The USB ports are soldered to the mother board on the mac mini so you cannot upgrade them to USB 2!

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't know what all the complaints are about 9 Nov 2008
By DW
I can't understand why people are so negative about this bit of kit.

My personal opinion is this is an excellent bit of kit and although larger than my existing 4 port USB hub, it stacks neatly with my Iomega MiniMax HD so it's not taking up yet another bit of desktop space. I use a MacBook so I don't have any issues with the short cables, but TBH I've got so many spare cables cluttering up my cupboard it's no problem to find a longer cable to plug this in.

Was surprised to see no power adapter in the box and to learn that the unit is obviously powered via Firewire. Fine if you are going to connect up to a machine with Firewire, but with new Macbooks having dropped Firewire 400 this needs to be considered. Despite this I think it is an excellent idea as it saves having to dig around under the desk to plug in yet another power brick.

5.0 out of 5 stars Does what it says on the tin! 13 Mar 2010
A very handy Hub that sits neatly under the Mac Mini offering BOTH FireWire and USB. It offers useful front ports for both formats which would have been improved if there was an extra front USB but the omission is not the end of the world. What is excellent is the lack of a power supply as it draws power from the FireWire cable that has a guaranteed (unlike USB) power feed which is great for those 'high-drain' USB devices. It is important to note that this is not only compatible with just Mac Minis but ANY computer with a Firewire and USB interface (If no firewire then it would be non-powered and share the current across all attached devices). In all a very useful and reliable device.

Note: the hub ships with two very short USB and FireWire cables designed to plug into the Mac Mini without leaving excess cabling which is genius. If using with a different PC just substitute with longer cables instead!
